Where do you turn to get industry information?
To stay on top of industry updates and news, in order to provide the best service for your clients and as well as your business, where do you turn for information? Magazines, websites, company managers? Please be specific.
This is a great question not just for people and their industries, but for people, like web developers, who may need information on the TONS of industries depending on who they are working with at the moment.
Industry Magazines (Often with online versions) are my go-to place because they are chalk full of awesome information and current events. As a marketer, they also yield advertisements to see what the "hot buttons" in the industry currently are.
Google Blogs is also a great place to find blogs by industry experts.
The problem with what I do is that their is just so much misinformation out there, either because it's outdated or simply bad advice. Due to this, I've come to rely only on my own testing, other than a few reliable resources. Searchengineland and Moz articles are usually as a result of heavy testing and can mostly be relied upon. Other than those two, I'll keep a check on Google's blog and one or two personal blogs of experts I know who thoroughly split-test.
In terms of SEO, SEL and Moz are really the only authority sites needed.
i take infos on the web not magazines.
Magazines take often their infos on the web too.
You can have everything on internet. EVERYTHING!
You just have to find the good sources.
Another key place to get industry information is from industry associations, many times they are constantly collecting and compiling the information to evaluate changes occurring in the industry
I would say that depends on which industries you are interested in and what is your level of understanding on those industries. I guess from your open question you are trying to gather info regarding an unknown or poorly known industry, right? If this is the case first you should look for official information from the industry association on official sources like government or banks studies or releases on such industries than you may look for dissertation on the same subject, both will give you hard and knowledge. Aftar that you can go for G+ or any other internet community related to the industry you want and have soft info, trends, etc.
Lately, I have been depending on Professional Learning Communities within various sites on the Internet. G+ is heavily geared toward business and has communities focusing on many domains, as does Facebook.
However, my favorite is Linkedin for joining groups that are engaged in deep discussion about our niche. I learn so much up-to-date info from these...oh, and blogs which I follow that I have RSS feeds for.
It's excellent networking and from a global perspective. Insurance is huge, so you shouldn't have any difficulty finding those who are already active.
What are you currently using to keep yourself updated on trends in your industry?
Google searches, your industries magazines or ezines. LinkedIn is a great source as well. As you search various articles in your field it sends you related material pertaining to your searches.
Best of success! Gil
I used to gather information from google blog, searchengineland, searchenginewatch and seo moz.
Magazines, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Trade Organizations & Publications
Some resources that I like are:
- Google News: Find recent articles on a company, industry etc.
- Google Trends: Who is searching for what. This is often a great way to see what the masses think about something.
- The wayback machine: This archive includes almost every website that ever lived. What was on the Pets.com home page in 2002? They can tell you.
- Industry associations: The sites are typically not that useful, but if you do a search of their site for links to PDF files, you can often file a treasure trove of information.
Good luck! The specific industry does make a difference, but hopefully these topline tools will help.
I receive a number of industry publications that help me stay up to speed with whats happening in the industry and what some of my larger competitors are doing to succeed.
For my industry niche I use a lot of Trade Publications, non-profit organizations that the industry professional belong to and the certification sites they use for their credentialing.
As some one else mentioned, there is plenty of Mis-Information out there! Also you have to be aware of all the legal or ethical problems you can put a client in if you are managing their reputation and posting information that they simply can not say.
