Where is the best place for a photographer to advertise?
I would like to increase the activity of my business, but many of my marketing directions have not wielded any new clients? The newspaper results were zero, online is a lot of work and very little return of people becoming paying clients? I'm not sure what the answer to my dilemma is?
Great photographers are absolute gold .. so well done by the way.
As a marketer, a well written story is nothing without an emotive awesome photo. The trends are non istock, so booming area.
Here is my advice:
Find your niche and chase it. If people, then focus on seniors, its the biggest growth area etc..
Find some businesses who are in the spotlight, have great ethics and websites. You know the kind of ones you want to work with.
Then look for something they need, offer to do the photography for free for a link and promo op on their website.
For example, one photographer I have worked with in Australia, is Mike Curtain www.mcphoto.com.au
These images are wow emotive...so aim for emotive...!!
Link up with marketing people...look for contra relationships.
I'm in Brisbane and would love to have a photographer relationship, to promote them and assist in marketing. In return, occasionally get an awesome photo taken for a particular event/story etc.
2. Find industries who need your services.
3. Word of mouth is going to be your biggest tool. Find the businesses, medium sized not too big, who are good, strong in promotion and you have a solution for. i.e. too many obvious stock shots on their site..etc.
4. Reward and recognition.
When you get a great business on board, find ways to reward them.
One way that can work is to ask and record any referrals to your business. If you obtain one, simply send a gift and nice letter to the referrer and be humble and honest. 'Thanks for referring new customers to my business, it is really appreciated, happy customers are etc...WHY . Because you just surprised your customer and they will tell more people about your kind gesture. Handwritten...is gold.
sorry about the rave..hope it helps.
Hey Linda, I would normally suggest Google Adwords for someone in your business. But like you said it can be a lot of work (and a huge learning curve).
Have you tried a referral program? Reaching out to your current and past clients and offering a payment for any referrals that become clients? That's a great method for developing word of mouth and you only pay when you get a new client.
An effective social media program I've seen used is asking your clients for permission to post some of their pics on Facebook. If they say yes be sure to friend them and tag them in the photos. Often they will share your post with their friends and family.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
So true Linda - traditional media doe snot really work unless you pour a huge amount of funds into it. Maybe you can try some local papers, ie. say you do Weddings and they have a wedding edition but still you may not get any response. A coupon with limited time frame to get a discount may work. Social media like Twitter or Facebook may work. Facebook ads are really affordable but still people may see your Facebook ad and or like your page but to convert them to an actual customer is another story. Say you are a wedding photographer, you can try finding or teaming up with a florist or caterer as you need the same client but don't compete with each other. Stay away from online directories or listing that want a fee like so much a month or year, never pulls in result. If you can list yourself "as a consumer oriented " business on Yelp do so.
One of my local clients in home repairs bought some nice branded tool kits and went around to residential homes in nice areas offering the free tool kit and their services, no strings attached. As these home owners either can't do their own repairs or are professionals and don't have the time, so they need a service. We could try and see if we can find a custom printed item to fit into your photography business that you could mail or drop off to potential clients with a letter, brochure or discount offer on first order/contract for your services. As we have a huge source of items in all budgets and interest areas/themes that can be imprinted with your logo.
Trade shows be it consumer or B2B may work but they are not cheap for 1-3 days and results may not show up for weeks or months, again like newspaper ads.
I would "really" look at something imprinted with your name/logo and given as a gift with brochure or postcard to potential clients for instance we can even do custom donuts boxes imprinted with your photography work on them and you logo, you can then drop off free donuts that you bought from a local Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme shop to potential clients. We can even do the same with custom coffee cups, individual serving packs of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, cappuccino mixes too. Or corporate popcorn bags/tins and you can choose the flavor and color of the popcorn too. Instead of the donut boxes, we can do custom photo pizza boxes and you could deliver a hot pizza to potential clients with your brochure printed like a takeout menu. All these items and more can be done via our network of USA suppliers. The food safe pizza or donut boxes min order is 250.
We can even do full color custom printed cardboard envelopes min 200 in various sizes that will look like a FedEx or UPS or USPS style overnite letter that you could send to clients with your material inside.
You can even do a coaster sized color calendar and pop them in the mail with your name/logo on the bottom half too. Minimum is only 100 pieces.
Feel free to reach out to me Linda for more ideas or help!
For your project "Compassionate Photography,” i suggest focusing on an email marketing campaign.
Building and sharing with your lists.
- Articles If you were to invest in advertising in the local paper with an ad for your business, the day after your ad is run, you are done. But when you advertise on the Internet with an article, it NEVER dies!
Press Releases After you've written your Article, it's time to work it into a Press Release!
Video Marketing Take your Article, and work it into a Video!
To name a few,...
I had introduced a photographer to a business-women network...She organized for us individual portrait photo sessions for our online CV/profile...This was an opportunity for her to present her services...
I hope it will little help you. I am eager to collaborate with you. please follow me on www.experiencenepaltreks.com.np
Don't overlook wonderful creative sites like AIGA and Behance. They are our best friend when it comes to creative social media networking. Perhaps youre just looking in the wrong places. Elance and all those sites tend to have little return, however Ive gotten a lot of business leads from Linked in and from people viewing my work on Behance. Start there and market the hell out of yourself! If you need help with Branding, Im always available. :) Feel free to connect.
