Hi James,

I am the Community Manager for Business.com. We recently published an article on affordable communication tools based on expert advice offered on this topic in the past. Here is the link: https://www.business.com/articles/tools-managing-remote-employees/

I hope you find it helpful.

My preferred communication tool has always been Slack. It's cheap and easy to converse back and forth with multiple people on your team. My team uses the mobile application for Slack a lot to communicate when we're out of the office. You can create folders to categorize topics of conversation, as well as message team members privately. The downsides to Slack is that conversation points can easily get buried if multiple people are talking. If you don't have the paid version, your conversation gets lost after 10,000 messages. And file sharing isn't ideal. Often I will share a file and when I go to find it in the search it's not there, so I have to scroll back through the messages to locate it.

Slack is not a full collaboration tool, it lacks scheduling and task management capabilities, but if you are looking for a simple-to-use communication tool for your team, it is a great option. Most small teams can easily get by on the free version.

Another option for collaboration is Teamwork PM. We use the Teamwork to manage all our projects, so employees, freelancers, clients etc., can all have access to the same project and we can control permissions. The mobile version works very well, however, their chat program is not the best.

Keeping all communication in one place around a central project is essential. We used to use Podio, but switched to Teamwork and have never looked back. All collaboration tools doing a lot of the same functions, often comes down to your specific needs and tastes and budget.
