Which URL should I promote - Facebook page or website url?
My startup provides local information to the South Asian community. I have created a facebook page and twitter handle. We push our tweets to our facebook page.
The site has a generic like button for the site as well individual like buttons for individual blogs, classifieds, etc.
My question is which which URL should I promote using the generic Like button? Should the like button point to our site url http://www.indonri.com or our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/indonri?
Which option is better from a long term marketing perspective? Is there a way to see who has Liked our site url?
i think that you should go for URL Option as it will increase your brand value and authenticity. for example you can see https://www.rojgaram.com/ for job updates it is fastest growing job portal
Facebook but at the same time, you should be advertising your website on Facebook and get all people to stay on your website page. Your goal is for them to follow your daily updates or content on Facebook but keep referring back to the website that has the entire book of information. Facebook is just a source to get them to your webpage ultimately that is where they are going to get the most answers.
You should focus on your site promotion.
By the way, not so long ago I have read an article about Facebook (https://ivypanda.com/essays/facebook-should-be-banned/) and in my personal opinion, there is no reason to promote Facebook page for now.
Facebook is an incredible tool, please don't let American state cause you to assume otherwise. However, on your website, you'll convert a lead where as on Facebook you'll solely extremely nurture your lead into another part of the sales cycle/funnel.
First of all, the best method is to create interesting topics on your page, and according to the visitor's orientation, it makes sense to introduce them both as URL and article. You can get expert support.
It depends on your business goal. If you want to create a brand and get a page like you need to promote the Facebook page, in this case, you have to use http://www.facebook.com/indonri this URL. But if you consider website traffic sales, conversion and other then you have to use a web page URL like http://www.indonri.com.
Promote both. To determine which to focus on, ask yourself which is more likely to get your customer to spend money. Will they have to jump through extra hoops trying to purchase on Facebook?
Make the collection of money as easy as possible for your customers.
Facebook has the potential to get you more quality traffic if you handle your FB page with creative things. The Facebook page allows you to put your website URL on the button so people can easily visit your website. As per the survey, the Facebook page is the biggest source of website traffic.
As far as long term marketing perspective is a concern, promote your website through various social media channels as per your business niche.
Facebook is one of the most popular social platforms and a good source to gain traffic if you promote your business in a systematic way. If you want to promote your site via social channels, then the button link will use as a website URL which helps to get referral visitors to your site and Can be converted into good customers.
Facebook is not only a social platform, but it is also a good source to divert people to your web page. You should use the button URL mention, visit our site. And if you promote your Facebook page, then the second option is another good choice.
Neither is going to be good long term. The Facebook following does not matter as they can kill organic reach anytime they want. It's a borrowed audience.
For the type of service you have mentioned, I would recommend collecting emails. I will not push any specific service, as any email collecting form will help. With emails, you can reach your audience no matter which social media they are on. All ads must take them to a page where a pop-up form asks for their email. Hope this helps.
You should drive traffic to the site(s) where you want the actions of visitors to take place. If you are selling products at your site, that would be your primary choice unless you are only wanting actions to take place at Facebook.
You may choose to create a Shop button on Facebook to let those visitors stay on Facebook to complete a transaction. You want your prospects and customers to have the easiest possible experience to sign up, buy or donate.
Don't get hung up on getting likes. It's your interaction that will develop relationships, credibility and eventually, evangelists, for your organization.
Everyone here has good advice. As an internet marketer, this one is a no brainer for me; YOUR WEBSITE!
Facebook is an amazing tool, please do not let me make you think otherwise. However, on your website, you can convert a lead whereas on Facebook you can only really nurture your lead into another phase of the sales cycle/funnel. With the advancements in web design today, all the benefits of Facebook (likes, follows, etc) can be incorporated into your website.
The "Golden Rule" of internet marketing is get them to your website, never navigate them away from your website.
Would you rather have another "like" on your Facebook page or have that same customer fill out a form with all their information, requesting more information from you about your business or service? Seems like an easy choice to me
I hopped on your website to see what "generic like" button you are referring to. I do see your Facebook "like"button which, of course, would be linked to your Facebook...always!- especially because the Facebook "like" button is a property of Facebook and must always connect to Facebook. If this doesn't answer your question, can you point out the generic button you are talking about?
I like some of the comments from others on here but you have to ask yourself what your ultimate goals are as to where you should be pointing people with your marketing efforts. Is your agenda to get more likes on your page or for people to go check out your latest posts, or both? I'd recommend that you have this clearly defined for yourself before determining which url you'd like to promote/send people to.
Side note: If you are going to have any social channel push to the other, I'd recommend flip flopping it - have your Facebook push to Twitter. There are tools out there to help you do this that are free or low cost. Hashtags and Twitter handles negatively impact the look of your Facebook page and may deter people from liking you, however, Facebook posts pushing to Twitter will not negatively impact your reputation.
I think long-term, you should be promoting your website.
Simply because facebook is subject to changes, and it is just another tool that you use to drive traffic to your site.
Your site is under your control. And it is what describes your products and services. If you have any intention of generating more leads for your business, you should be promoting your site, for which you can use facebook as an effective tool. End of the day, it should be your site.
Thanks for all the responses. Just to clarify, my question was about setting up Like button and not about promoting site url or facebook url.
I did some research and looks like most companies are linking the "Like" button to their facebook page.

The advantage of user's liking your facebook page is that any post on the page will appear on the user's wall.
As the page owner, we can share links to blogs or other content that point back to the site. In this regard, I agree with Chris Sabanty below that it is more beneficial to setup Likes for facebook page rather than site url since this option provides better opportunities to engage the users.
The disadvantage is that some of the discussions will happen on facebook page rather than on our site.
Both have their own value. If you want to get more traffic to your website and potential customers, then promoting your website url is a better option . If you want to enhance your web presence and get more likes and popularity then promoting your Facebook page is a better option. If your website content more or less remains the same you can promote your FB url.
It would be great if you promote website URL than facebook, which helps every visitor to get information about services/product.
If your only concern is to build fanbase for your facebook page, then Facebook Ads is great way to get likes and promote your products/services.
Facebook provide insight report of likes.
I would ask a question before answering. What is your monetization model? You don't have to make it public, but if it involves people visiting your website and looking at the ads or classifieds there, I would say take all the traffic to your website. Also stay active on Google+ if you are looking for organic traffic to your website. Your facebook content stays within FB, it doesn't add up to your SEO karma. Also, ppl like so many pages these days, and after hearing about 'buying likes' from a few Indian entrepreneurs, I am a little disillusioned about the value of FB likes. My colleagues here can correct me if they wish. Vivek, feel free to respond with any additional questions.
Mel, Thanks for the response. Based on the responses here I realized that I have not framed my question correctly. My question was related to setting up "Like" buttons. We have two instances of Like button 1) Like button for a specific blog/event/classified & 2) Like button at the bottom of the page which I am referring to generic "Like" button. My question was what should be the URL for the 2nd Like button a) facebook page of the site or b) website url of our site.
