Why don't small businesses care about cybersecurity?
I'm a staff writer for business.com, and I attended a Dell event about cybersecurity earlier today. Many of the tech experts in the room stressed the major risks businesses face from cyberattacks, but there are still so many SMBs with barely any cybersecurity measures. Why is this?
In my opinion, there's an out-of-sight, out-of-mind mentality at play. Since cyber threats aren't visually evident in the same way a shop lifter would be, I think small businesses tend to ignore cybersecurity and hope for the best. What do you think it will take for small businesses to invest heavily (time and money) into cybersecurity?
Are there types of articles regarding cybersecurity that you'd like to read? I'd love to hear from the business.com community about what type of cybersecurity content would most benefit you and your businesses.
Cybersecurity is a serious threat to all the types of business including SMB. As most of our system is dependent on the internet and computer, investing in secured internet security systems will surely help us. It's always better to be safe than sorry. I operate a small business and I have most of my systems on the cloud so I can make sure that all the applications are properly secured.
Really awesome question you raised.
I must share my point of view for the same. Cybersecurity is surely a threat for all of us, including SMBs, but still, the mindsets of small business owners are not to invest in out-of-the-box things.
It can be solved by the following ways -
1. Educating and training them with regards to cybersecurity.
2. Startups of cybersecurity can help SMBs by providing easy & less expensive services to them, in such cases, the cybersecurity startups will earn from sharing multiple small businesses cybersecurity systems at one time.
Attackers can harm anyone, small businesses, their owners or their customers. It is time to take it seriously.
Thank you. Blessings for the day.
The business criticality in terms of information a small company holds will be limited. All the important business and transactional records will be backed up in a secured area anyways by the IT division.
Rest information on the internet like a company website or social media account even if it gets hacked is not of any monetary loss. Small companies don't store much customer data or payment details online that is vulnerable to hack. It can be a reason why small companies are not thinking of sophisticated cybersecurity but basic protection for there assets is what their concern is.
