I just had a situation where I tried to recover some images after formatting both the CF card and the xD card.
I tried three different programs and got the same results.
I was able to retrieve some of the files from the CF card, but the xD card showed zero files on it. One of the help pages on one of the software (which one?) stated that sometimes cameras format the card and overwrite all files with X's and O's.
This seems to be the case and also makes me think that this writing process is why it takes about 30 seconds to format my xD type H card in my S3 and only about 2 seconds with my Cf cards.
I was in the same boat with you!
Normally I wouldn't bother trying to rescue images from a corrupted xd card, but on this occasion it was all the photos of my baby from birth to 1 year b-th day , so imagine my horror when I stuck my xD Card into the card reader and got an error message! I was really lucky to find this xd card data recovery https://www.cleverfiles.com/xd-card-recovery.html . It costed me a fortune but did a great job.
