About Me

It started over 40 years ago. I spent 21 years in a family clothing manufacturing business learning about manufacturing, production scheduling, personnel management, selling, marketing and financial management. It was a 'hands-on' business education and much of it was learned from watching my Father and Mother who worked together for most of their lives.

In 1982, I read Management by Peter Drucker ... the book that changed my entire attitude to the concept of Business Management.

The next few years then reinforced the concept of what was eventually to become Brightwater Partnership. On two separate occasions the family clothing company engaged Consultants ... each time with poor and disastrous results. I realise now that we were totally responsible for those outcomes!

So after those poor consulting experiences I realised there had to be a better way. Eventually I sold the family clothing business and in 1993 created Brightwater Partnership.

Brightwater Business Coaching... a partnership between Small and Medium Business Owners and a structured business development program delivered by experienced Business Advisers. There are only two criteria for a successful Brightwater Business Adviser/Coach ... to have owned a small business and to follow the Brightwater System.

What do you like most about your profession?

Working with people who are open to bigger and better outcomes from their business. Whether a new business just starting out or an experienced business owner looking for an exit strategy, every client has a unique perspective and by tapping that perspective they can have the successful outcome they desire.

What questions do clients most commonly ask you? How do you respond?

Q. Am I the only one who feels this way? A. Yes and No! For you the feeling is unique and you can use that uniqueness to maximise the opportunity. On the other hand, there are many others that will start looking for the same answers as you at the very moment you started looking, (100th Monkey Syndrome) so get on with it! THere is not a moment to lose! Q. Can I just do the Systems without doing the Business Plan! A. I retell an anecdote from a very successful client! He said he knew he wanted the Documented Systems and was not sure about doing a Business Plan. In our earlier conversation he said this, "I made more money when it was me and a mate from the back of a truck, than I did last year employing 30 people!" My response was simple, "You need to create the Plan for either you, a mate and a truck or a business employing 30 people because the systems you will need will be different." At last count his business was employing over 150 people!

Describe a recent client engagement or project.

All of our clients entered a structured program. They know what to do and what to expect. Some recent clients: Young (mid 20s) husband and wife Electrical Contractors wanting to grow without making too many mistakes; Large steel shed manufacturer wanted his selected person to have a greater understanding of business management. After 6 months the Owner declared that he (the selected person) was now the General Manager/VP; A successful business owner wanted to branch out into another marketplace and was not sure how to go about it. With a documented plan in hand he is now making great inroads into his new market sector.

What are 3 attributes you need to be successful in your industry?

Regular Interaction (with a structure! not just a "chat fest"!); Structured Program so you know what to do and what comes next; Empathy and Flexibility - things change, people change, times change.

What are the most important things to consider when hiring a service provider in your field?

Their background and experience - have that actually owned and run a business? Testimonials - they will only be good ones but how many can they show you and which ones do you relate to; Structured Programs - not just the introduction but the full program; Regular Interaction - how often will you meet and for how long. What is their availability? Guarantee - are they willing to put their money where their mouth is?

What are your biggest professional influences (books, mentors, events)?

Started in 1982 with Management by Peter Drucker. In 1993 when I started Brightwater it was Michael Gerber - The E Myth. What followed has been years of reading, researching and writing. I always like to bring a slightly obtuse perspective to the subject of Management and often do this in my own writing..

How do you typically handle disagreements with clients?

Quickly and preferably face-to-face. I always say "I can't MAKE you do a Brightwater Program." If you want a different outcome you need to be prepared to do something differently. If Brightwater is not for you then let's shake hands and walk away friends.

Describe your proudest professional accomplishment.

I am proud of every single client who we have assisted to achieve success over the past 22+ years. Brightwater is not about US it is about YOU!.
