Profile Questions

What do you like most about your profession?

Video and film production is the hardest job that you will ever love. It is a lot of work, but when done right, the rewards of creating a finished product that moves, inspires, entertains or educates people is probably one of the greatest joys. Knowing that I have been a part of that process makes every second of work, long or odd hours, sore muscles and frustrations on the set or event worth every minute. Creativity in all aspects of any production is both welcomed and encouraged, but it is no place for big egos; it is a place where teamwork; real teamwork pays big dividends in the end.

What questions do clients most commonly ask you? How do you respond?

I am most often asked what I charge for my services. My usual response is that I charge a fixed rate per day of shooting plus all editing time, but because I am a small company that works out of my home, I am able to keep many of the normal production costs down.

Describe a recent client engagement or project.

One of my more recent projects was done for the founder of Faith, Hope and Love Outreach Center; a non-profit that works toward empowering people in 3rd world countries, and gives people the tools to improve their socio-economic place in life, lifting them out of poverty. The video was for a crowd-funding project for the founder's product, called The Bedsheert, which was to be produced to support her charity's work. She was so happy with the final video that she had me return to shoot additional footage for an audition for the TV show "Shark Tank".

What are 3 attributes you need to be successful in your industry?

Integrity, dedication to the art and perseverance.

What are the most important things to consider when hiring a service provider in your field?

Are they honest enough to tell you what they cannot do, because what a company cannot do is as important as what they can do; this includes them being willing and able to provide sources or samples of finished works that they have made.

How are you different than others in your profession?

I work in a PC format, which is fairly rare, so I am told, therefore I do not have the massively expensive Mac programs that the larger, more expensive production houses have. Because I am small, I will wait on those systems and programs until they become necessary for me to have.

What are your biggest professional influences (books, mentors, events)?

My biggest influences in the industry have been people like George Lucas, who, even with the new technologies available, still works with the old-school philosophy and Alfred Hitchcock, who was a master of his art, letting the audience fill in the scenes through creative camera techniques and use of silhouette instead of blatant, in your face gore and Charlie Chaplin, who was not only an innovator of his art, but was able to successfully create one of the most poignant and moving message films of his time; The Great Dictator, where he wrote, directed and starred in two roles in the film.

How do you typically handle disagreements with clients?

I gently try to explain that there are some things that cannot work for what they want and help them to understand that there may be another way to accomplish their intended project goal.

Describe your proudest professional accomplishment.

I am proud of every project that I have worked on. That is not to say that I have been necessarily happy with all of them, but no project is truly perfect.
