About Me

I am passionate about teaming up with entrepreneurs to achieve their goals. With over 30 years of experience in corporate management, small business ownership and marketing, I understand the unique challenges facing business people today. I can help small businesses get started with business plans, strategy, branding, web design and social media integration.

I graduated from McMaster University in Hamilton, Sheridan College, Oakville and Bournemouth College (UK) with business and marketing as specialties. After graduating, I have had varied management experience with different corporations in the GTA, with the last being the General Manager of the Canadian division of a US-based multinational corporation. In this role, I used my business coaching expertise to establish a Canadian management team as the leading group within the company. I have additionally been a small business owner of a fast food restaurant, which gave me unique insights into the challenges small businesses face.

Or, perhaps you have your business strategy organized and are looking for someone to create a responsive website design (one that also works on mobile devices). Or maybe you'd like to set up and fine-tune your company's social media. Whether you are a startup or business that is trying to get to the next level, we can help you.

The XL Consulting Group personnel are professional, intelligent, articulate and dependable. We give our clients highly personalized service by phone, Skype, Google Hangouts, email or in person, depending on whatever works for you. An initial 1/2 hour discovery call is complimentary.

What do you like most about your profession?

The variety of questions and problems we are able to solve

What questions do clients most commonly ask you? How do you respond?

How to understand financials and how to make sure they have a good website. Guiding clients towards understanding their financials by putting them on an easy to understand spreadsheet and helping clients understand what the numbers mean. Regarding good websites, I show a prospective a wireframe of what their website could look like, incorporating all the fundamentals of good web design

Describe a recent client engagement or project.

Helping a restaurant client move from negative earnings to positive earnings by examining the business and together, as an integral part of their team, creating different strategies to achieve a successful outcome.

What are 3 attributes you need to be successful in your industry?

Listen to the prospective client to understand their problem. Be creative in offering solutions, one size does not fit all. Have empathy with the client so they feel comfortable and trust us.

What are the most important things to consider when hiring a service provider in your field?

The consultant under promises and over delivers so the client gets real value Make sure the consultant listens If the consultant isn't comfortable performing the service, that they recommend someone else who can help the client

How are you different than others in your profession?

We can provide consulting services to the small business client in many areas, so that they only need one service provider

What are your biggest professional influences (books, mentors, events)?

Learning from other professionals in related fields, books and prior experiences in various industries

How do you typically handle disagreements with clients?

At this point I have not had any disagreement with clients, since we have a clear idea of engagement at the beginning and any questions are answered on a timely basis along the way.

Country Manager/Director Marketing Administration at Victor Technologies International, Inc. (formerly Thermadyne)

March 2009 - April 2012
Responsible for the Canadian operations for Victor Technologies (formerly Thermadyne Holdings Corp.) of St. Louis, Mo. as well as directing the marketing efforts in Canada

Spearheaded a project across multiple disciplines to change the financial status of the Company for annual savings in excess of $1M per year. This was the first multi-disciplined project that was delivered on time.

As Director of Marketing Administration was Canada's primary lead for product launches with teams consisting of engineering, marketing, project management in both the US and China. All products were launched successfully and on time.

Negotiated severances for employees that were being downsized due to jobs moving to the U.S. to ensure fair treatment of staff.

Represented Victor Technologies at the Canadian Welding Association to help further welding industry education and awareness. Contributed articles to the Canadian Welding Association newsletters on issues of interest to the welding community.
