I began this journey into graphic art and web design in 1992, not long after graduating from Michigan State University with my journalism degree. I was exposed to desktop publishing while I was there.
So, I started up Computer Publishing Concepts in March 1992, and at first, I was primarily a resume service as well as handled basic fliers, brochures, and other things. I started attending Lansing Community College, where I would go twice in the 1990s, and began learning more about graphic art. Around the time of my second go-round there, the World Wide Web was started as we know it today, and I started getting interested in web design. So, with a basic HTML editor and one of the old versions of Photoshop, I started designing web sites.
The new decade saw me continue to build my skills, first at Baker College in Owosso, and then at
Mott Community College, in Flint, Michigan. The time at Mott was my second go-round (I also went during the early and mid-1980s), and I was very fortunate to get into another great art program (LCC was also a great art program), and was able to keep my grades up and wouldn't you know it, the University of Michigan-Flint began recruiting me to attend their school a full year before I actually went. The years at UM-Flint were the happiest of my life, and I learned a lot more about graphic art, web design and motion graphics than I ever thought I'd ever learn. I was in business the whole time, and worked on the student newspaper as well. I even earned an ADDY Award in 2008 for the VSA Michigan-Genesee County's website.

What do you like most about your profession?
It helps keep my mind busy, and offers me new challenges seemingly every day.
What questions do clients most commonly ask you? How do you respond?
How much does it cost for me to do something. Every web site or graphic design is different, so I need to either sit down and talk to them, or go over things (Skype, Google + Hangouts). Need to determine what the client's needs are before giving them a price.
What are the most important things to consider when hiring a service provider in your field?
That they know what they are talking about. I look at their web sites, printed materials, blogs, Social media posts. I look to see if they are well written (usually by the provider themselves - not by some copywriter), and what they say that could be of use to me. Meeting with them personally or through phone conversations (get an idea of who they are, see if they are well spoken, understand the reasons why I sought them out, and how they show me they are the right person for the job.
How do you typically handle disagreements with clients?
I usually try to talk to them to find out what the disagreement is about, and take some responsibility and fix it. I will not take on people who say "here it is ... DO IT!!!" To me, communication with my clients is essential. I consider them to be part of the design team, by them communicating their desires and needs with me, and working with me to help develop the material. I know their time is valuable to them, but if they really want a good web presence, they need to be involved in some capacity.
