Profile Questions

What questions do clients most commonly ask you? How do you respond?

The most common question that I'm asked by my clients and potential prospects is: "what do I have to do to be a better leader, so that I can grow my business/organisation, inspire my employees to higher performance and inspire and win the trust of my prospects to buy from me and more often? I've read all the books on persuasion, leadership and sales, but its just not enough!" My response is always the same. The most important skill you need to learn is authentic and genuine influence. This is what I teach all of my clients and how I've built my business. If leadership is the gun then influence is the trigger, if you don't have it, all the training and information on leadership is meaningless. I don't want you to be more persuasive, i want you to be more inspiring. Persuasion and sales is about trying to pull people to your way of thinking, inspiration is our natural ability to draw people to want to listen to what we have to say. Influence isn't about learning new techniques or tools, influence is about refining and shaping our character. The MOST influential people throughout history are those who dedicate their life to working on themselves.

Describe a recent client engagement or project.

Currently working with a highly talented CEO of a very well known corporate organisation based here in the UK and throughout the world. I work with the client exclusively 1-2-1 and we have a very strong and candid working relationship. The purpose of the work is to help the client to overcome his own internal stumbling blocks and beliefs about his own perceived failings as a leader and help him to see the bigger picture of serving the team of people that he leads aver and above his own insecurities. Just the other week I received a fantastic email from the client telling me how amazed he was with the breakthrough he's been having with leading his team since he's been focusing more on their needs and the needs of the team as a whole over what he thinks about his own personal achievements and self-worth. This is just one of many success stories I have the pleasure to be involved in at the moment but I chose to mention this one as this has not been as straight forward or successful as others. This clients journey has been challenging at times, due to the 20 plus years that my client has been thinking a certain way it has required me to be patient with the client and continually use the same skills of influence and leadership of which the client is paying me to see the results with them personally and I am really pleased to say that this perseverance has now paid off!

What are 3 attributes you need to be successful in your industry?

Passion, Vision and Empathy.

What are the most important things to consider when hiring a service provider in your field?

If I were hiring a leader for my organisation I'd be looking for an indication of whats in their heart. What I mean by this is lots of people can spout off about how they're caring and empathetic leaders, but the proof of this is how they really care. Of course passion, vision, strategy, inspiration, experience and track record are REALLY important, but if a person does not deeply care about other people and have an ability to empathetic to their needs, people will not be willing to follow them. If you want an example of this, just look at politicians. Often highly educated, well spoken and passionate about politics, yet politicians are despised and loathed by many people! In summary, all of my studies, research and feedback over the years from thousands of clients points to the fact that the most successful and longest lasting leaders, were the ones that genuinely cared about others the most.

How are you different than others in your profession?

One word. Authentic. One of my greatest strengths is to be completely real and authentic about who I am and the feedback from my clients and people who follow my work is that they feel that they are really seeing the real Luke, which is true. In my profession theres an ever increasing trend of gurus. I've had the pleasure in some instances and displeasure at other times to meet and hear many of the big names in my industry speak and I've also been exposed to the lies and manipulation that some of these people are using to sell people their services. I decided a few years ago that I wanted nothing to do with these kinds of people so for that reason I do not attend any trainings or endorse or recommend anything that these people are involved in. As a leader, I want to be transparent and completely open about who I am and what I do. And aside from my skill and expertise in my field as a leadership expert, this is what gives me a powerful edge.

What are your biggest professional influences (books, mentors, events)?

By far my mentors. Second would be my personal experience and education, training courses and books.

How do you typically handle disagreements with clients?

Actually I have never had a situation that I would class as a disagreement with a client, due to the fact that I am highly selective about who I choose to work with. There have been a few times when theres been some confusion between a client and I about something agreed during a 1-2-1 session, but this has always been resolved quickly without escalating or damaging our relationship.

Describe your proudest professional accomplishment.

I think having the opportunity to consult for a billionaire investor is one of the proudest moments for myself. When I look back on the journey that I've been on over the last 10 years I'm stunned at the changes that have taken place in my life in order for this moment to happen. For me this moment is the first of many examples of how I practice what I preach about using influence to achieve extraordinary results as a leader.
