What do you like most about your profession?

What I like most about my profession, is the ability to work with entrepreneurial people in a wide variety of industries. I've learned to bring my highly technical skill set to the executive table in such a non-technical way that I've been able to help numerous executives improve their businesses 10 fold.

Describe a recent client engagement or project.

Most recently, I established a team to act as a company's finance department. Company was going through a turnaround and the CFO and the Controller both quit within 4 months of each other. The Company was owned by a private equity firm and required monthly reporting which was being done but the system was weak and therefore the numbers were weak. We worked with external auditors and adjusted the reporting to proper GAAP. Then we adjusted how we prepared the monthly reports to use proper accruals for known expenses and the reporting became much more fluid. The reporting was then actually able to show the extent of the turnaround and explain the progress. This was helpful in rearranging bank financing and expanding into the more profitable product lines. Great project, great result.

What are 3 attributes you need to be successful in your industry?

You can only be a CFO level executive, especially on a part-time basis, if you've been around the block a few times. You need the experience to be able to provide that level of decision making, and when you are dealing with multiple clients, you really have to know your subject matter because now you have the nuances of working with possibly different industries. Technical knowledge doesn't hurt as well. I have my undergraduate degree in accounting, my masters in finance and I turned that knowledge into college level teaching experience. You have to be able to answer the questions in your area of expertise, or people won't believe you have the ability to help them. Finally, you need to be a people person. Your personality has to shine through and put your knowledge and experience on the table in such a way that people understand you, trust you and follow your direction. Otherwise, you're wasting their time, and more importantly, your own.

How are you different than others in your profession?

I think I am different from others in my profession because I have worked for one of the biggest consulting firms in the world as well as some of the smallest firms in the region. So I bring a wealth of knowledge from both big business and entrepreneurship. I'm the first one to roll up my sleeves and dig into a box full of relevant paper to find my answer -- I don't wait for someone else to volunteer to do it for me. Most of my clients become long-time clients and even friends -- because we take on projects as partners and take a vested interest in a targeted result.
