I help SMBs and sole proprietors with effective design and online marketing.
I obtained a BA in art from UCLA in 1995 and started JVM Design shortly after. With a background in photography and graphic design, web design was a natural progression. Over the years I've gained experience working with a wide variety of clients and industries and have had the opportunity to work with clients as large as Nike and MTV. Now, with 20 years of experience in design and marketing, I have the ability to craft solutions that meet client goals.
I'm also an experienced writer and an advocate for educating sole proprietors, small business, and medium businesses on design and marketing topics as well as doing better business. In 2012, I wrote, "50 Tips for Working With Designers", to help both clients and designers to create successful working relationships and successful projects. It was meant to be a quick read and resource. You can download that for free here: http://www.jvmediadesign.com/blog/design/50-tips-for-working-with-designers/

What are the most important things to consider when hiring a service provider in your field?
A few blog posts I have written perfectly answer this question: http://www.jvmediadesign.com/blog/business/how-to-find-a-web-designer/ http://www.jvmediadesign.com/blog/design/when-its-not-a-good-fit/
How are you different than others in your profession?
While I feel everyone is different in their own ways, I'm different from many in the field of design and marketing because of my art background. I have a BA in Studio Art from UCLA School of Art and I had a heavy emphasis in photography. I applied my artistic eye and skill to graphic design while I was still in college. Without an education that was specific to graphic design, however, the possibilities of working for a design agency were limited. So I started my own agency right out of college. My creative background has helped immensely over the years. 2015 marks my 20th year in business. Over the years I gained a lot of experience in design and marketing, but I've also focused on staying current. I may be "old school" by default with my 20 years of experience, but I'm far from "old" when it comes to thinking about modern web and graphic design. I'm also a major supporter of goal-oriented design. Design and marketing need to go hand in hand. Unlike good art, which can often stand alone and just be art, good design needs to look great, but also serve a purpose. I'm a major supporter of education – both to prospective clients of design and fellow designers who are working to gain their experience. I do a lot of blog and article writing around the web that's geared towards educating on design and marketing, best practices for design, and information on these topics to help small businesses.
