No other Internet service has even come close to rivaling its speed. That is all about to change soon though with revolutionary DOCSIS 3.1 technology.
DOCSIS 3.1 will make it possible for cable companies to offer blazing fast internet speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second. These are speeds that can rival even Google Fiber.
Most cable Internet providers haven’t started rolling out DOCSIS 3.1 to their customers just yet.
DOCSIS 3.1 must be supported on both ends of the cable connection first, but experts say it’s only a matter of time (and a very short time at that) before cable companies can compete with Google Fiber with the right equipment in place.

The introduction of orthogonal frequency domain multiplexing (OFDM) has been critical for DOCSIS 3.1 development. DOCSIS 3.1 is able to use OFDM technology to provide as much as 50 percent more data capacity of the same spectrum.
Now, because of DOCSIS’s new capability, cable has the ability to run at 10 G on the downstream and 2 G on the upstream. With these speeds, cable is now poised to be an equal, or better, contender to Google Fiber when it comes to internet speed.
Advantages of OFDM
OFDM doesn’t use a single carrier (QAM) model. Instead, it uses multiple modulations. These modulations run up to 8,000 subcarriers. This means DOCSIS doesn’t need to be optimized for the weakest part of the plant. It can now use the highest QAM possible at any point. OFDM can change profiles in real-time so that modulations use the best parts of the plant. This increases speed and throughput by up to a 50 percent for a given frequency range.
DOCSIS 3.1 is also responsible for widening the upstream and downstream bandwidth, and the potential to use the full available spectrum in the cable environment is also possible.
This does mean some minor upgrades will be necessary. However, the great thing for Internet service providers is that they can pass along the benefit of increased speeds to their customers while the upgrades are taking place. Their speeds will gradually increase during the process, and when the upgrades are complete, customers will enjoy the new mind blowing cable Internet speed.

People will get better results from DOCSIS 3.1, including significantly reduced network delays. Because of Active Queue Management, data traffic growth in the home network won’t even cause delays.
Online gaming will benefit from these speeds because real-time, immediate responsiveness is a critical component of the application. Downloading movies will even be faster than ever and graphics will display at even higher resolutions.

It’s More Efficient
Not only is DOCSIS 3.1 fast, it’s also much more efficient. In fact, it’s 25 percent more efficient than earlier versions. What does 25 percent equate to? Hundreds of megabits more bandwidth for starters, and that’s without even making any changes to the network. Furthermore, networks that were already 100 percent utilized will experience an even higher capacity as well.

Obviously, such amazing broadband speeds open up additional possibilities for use of data-intensive applications. The greatest beneficiaries of DOCSIS 3.1 and its multi-gigabit download and upload capacity will be systems that use high-definition video, such as 4K television, augmented reality and games that rely on advanced graphics and 3D. Due to QoS capacity that prioritizes internet traffic for applications, even the most demanding video streams will run smoothly in real time.
