Get the Body Moving

Sitting at your desk all day isn’t good for your figure. You are not burning many calories when the only things moving are your fingers and your tongue. During your early career, this may not prove to be a problem, but in the long-term it can really come back to bite you.

Adopt good habits now by spending some of your break exercising. Not only will it preserve your health but you will feel better. There’s nothing better for clearing your head and getting you ready for the rest of the day than some exercise.

Contrary to what people think, you don’t have to pay for a gym membership. Grab your running shoes or your bicycle and spend your lunch break getting sweaty.

Talk to People

It’s amazing how you can be sitting in the same room as a whole group of people only to never speak to them. So many modern workers feel lonely and isolated in the workplace despite being surrounded by an entire team.

One look around the lunchroom and you’ll find people glued to their phones. Socializing online isn’t the same as socializing with a real person. Go out of your way to talk to people without the help of a screen.

And make sure you avoid talking about work. Speaking to others can put you in a good mood again, but try to avoid anything to do with the office. There’s nothing more draining than bringing office politics into your break.

Clean the Clutter

You may be wondering how this is something that’s going to break up the work day. The truth is cleaning your office cubicle can make it seem like a whole new place. Add in some air fresher, turn on your favorite music, and rearrange things.

It may only take a few minutes to accomplish, but decluttering your space will also declutter your mind. You also get bonus points if you clear some of your digital clutter as well.

Get that Annoying Task Done

The reason why working weighs so heavily on your mind isn’t because of the job itself. It’s that annoying task you have to deal with. While you are trying to get on with your usual deadlines, you have a growing list of little nagging tasks.

Use your breaks to get them done. It may seem counterproductive to work during your breaks, but you’ll feel better getting it out of the way, rather than allowing it to fester.

Do Something Creative

The reason why people feel like they have to have a coffee or eat a cake is their minds are frazzled. They have been concerned with the same tasks and the same subject all day. They need to take some time away from it.

So if one side of your brain is focusing on figures and customer service calls, let your other half of your brain concern itself with something different. Doing something creative is a fantastic way of rejuvenating yourself.

It can be absolutely anything, and you don’t need to be any good at it. Find some space and sing one of your favorite songs to yourself. Doodle on some paper. It could even be as simple as writing an email to a friend. It doesn’t have to involve business or anything important, just catching up.

You’ll be surprised how much happier you’ll be.

Indulge Somebody Else

You may not want to indulge in coffee and cake all the time, but there may be someone in your life who does. Don’t begrudge them that opportunity. Indulge them instead.  Buying a coffee for someone else can have the same effect as doing it for yourself, according to research from the New York Times.

Not only will you feel fantastic, but the chances are you will make a great friend in the process. This can have a hugely beneficial effect on morale in the workplace. You will actually want to come to work. And if everyone follows your lead you’re going to have a team that really cares for each other.

Start a trend. Be nice to people.

Why Indulging Yourself Healthily Pays

The problem with many unhealthy habits is they only provide a temporary fix for your problems. You may feel great about eating all that chocolate, but later on, you’re going to feel sickly as the fat and the sugar makes its way through your body.

Eating healthy and indulging in free pursuits can help you recover that lost income spent on Starbucks. Many companies are realizing the same, and that’s why they are going out of their way to promote healthy habits. The evidence is clear that you are going to get more out of someone who indulges in the right way.

What are your favorite ways to get away from it all and recover from the stresses of the day?
