The number of the elderly people is rapidly growing. As of 2016, about 8.5 percent of the world’s population was aged 65 and over. This number is expected to double by 2050. That's a lot of people to take care of, particularly since a majority of those are unable to take care of themselves properly. That task is usually left for the young and able. Given that many younger people are entrepreneurs who are always busy, it becomes hard for those people to care for the elderly parents by themselves. But many are thinking outside the box and turning to technology as tools that can help them and their parents avoid going to a home.

Here are the five ways in which technology is helping entrepreneurs take care of their elderly parents.

1. Simplify Communication

One of the ways technology is helping entrepreneurs take care of their elderly parents is by simplifying communication. The evolution of technology has seen the introduction of devices that make it easy for the elderly to communicate with their children. These specialized equipment have great capabilities that aid communication. For example, you can find a phone with large buttons to help those with impaired vision. There are also phones with enhanced audio to people with impaired hearing. These devices let younger folks check on their parents without having to physically go home.

2.  Motion Detector and Webcams

Another way in which technology is helping entrepreneurs take care of their elderly parents is using motion detectors and webcams. A motion detector is capable of monitoring activities in a particular area of the home. There is also the option of being notified when no activity is recorded. An entrepreneur also does not need to go home if there are webcams in the house that can be used to virtually look at one's elderly parents.

3. Audio Monitors

Audio monitors are useful to entrepreneurs working from their home garage. It allows for two-way communication any time. For example, an elderly parent can report difficulty in getting out of bed. This one can also be used to remind an elderly parent to take medication.

4. Chronic Care

The technology behind chronic care includes wearable gadgets such as watches with sensors. They help in communicating chronic conditions by monitoring the symptoms associated with some chronic diseases. The devices can monitor blood pressure, sugar levels and other health indicators. It helps the entrepreneur to know the condition of an elderly parent. It also helps in communicating to the doctor in case of an emergency.

5. Fall Prevention and Response

Every year, one in three elderly citizens will fall. These falls are among the leading causes of deaths due to the injuries sustained during the falls. Luckily, entrepreneurs can now use technology that is able to help in preventing falls. There are fall detectors, wheelchair alarms and sensor pads that are useful in preventing an elderly person from falling. According to Absolute Care Health, this response system can be linked with an emergency health care provider to assist an elderly parent just in case an entrepreneur is not there to physically take care of the parent.
