The mantra of cheaper, faster, and better is one that flash storage advocates are quick to emphasize, though it wasn’t always this way. For many years, flash was the more expensive option when compared to hard disk drives, but any advantage hard disks had in that category has slowly eroded away.
Expert predictions have indicated a price parity between the two will likely be reached in 2016. HP’s 3PAR flash specialist Phill Gilbert showed last year that the price of flash storage declined by an impressive 75 percent over an 18 month period. This was said in May of 2015, and prices have only dropped even more from that point on. The days of hard disk drives being the cheaper option may soon be over, making flash storage a viable option for more businesses.
