The 2014 Deloitte Millennial Generation Y Survey estimates millennials will comprise 75 percent of the global workforce in the upcoming decade.

Prudent businesses have reacted to this inevitability by injecting youth into their business and hiring more millennials, specifically by appealing to their demographic during the hiring process. However, there are plenty of other benefits to hiring millennials as well, beyond going with the trend.

1. Enhanced Digital Mastery

Many millennials grew up surrounded by technology, and aspects of social media may feel like second nature to them as opposed to a teachable skill. Whereas resources may have to be allocated to teach older potential employees about emerging software or tech, millennials are more likely to be tuned into current trends and technological utilization.

Being surrounded by various forms of technology growing up has also made many millennials capable of multitasking:

  • Millennials, on average, switch between different media platforms (tablets, TV, laptop, phone, etc.) 27 times per hour.
  • Previous generations only switch 17 times in the same span.

It shows more preparedness for potential change and a willingness to adapt to new platforms if they are superior.

2. Progressive Philosophical Changes

Modern business has plenty of aspects that can be criticized, including certain hierarchy structures and a reluctance to donate a portion of profits to charity.

Business leaders can instill a positive business philosophy among millennials by influencing certain actions since as new members in the workforce their notions of business can be molded by a pivotal leader. Millennials have the capacity to improve and highlight corporate responsibility programs, which elevate a business's profile in a positive way.

3. No Bad Habits to Kill

As relatively new members of the workforce, millennials typically haven't had the time to acquire bad work habits. As one of their first "real bosses," you have the capability to nip poor work behavior in the bud before it becomes a habit, in addition to praising good habits.

Conversely, older employees with previous experience are likelier to be stubborn in their ways if they had previous success, despite if they are using outdated methods used to obtain that success.

Sixty percent of millennials cite “a sense of purpose” as their most desired job attribute, showing a demanding position and work are positives as opposed to a job listing that highlights dull routine tasks.

“When looking at their career goals, today’s millennials are just as interested in how a business develops its people and how it contributes to society as they are in its products and profits,” says Deloitte Global CEO Barry Salzberg. “These findings should be viewed as a wake-up call to the business community.”                                                                                 

Businesses that present the ways in which they can positively impact society is increasingly attractive to a generation that is very well-read on environmental and political concerns. Coming across as more than “just another corporation” will surely come across as a positive for many potential millennial hires.

Present Growth Opportunities

Most millennials don’t just want a job; they want a career. With data such as average salary and benefits available in one Google search, millennials will know if you’re low-balling them. As such, it’s essential to present a fair salary and benefits package. Forty-four percent of millennials noted a competitive wage as a very important factor in their job search, but growth opportunities rank even higher.

Make Your Digital Presence Evident

With few exceptions, businesses without a digital presence are likely to fail; millennials recognize this. For millennials who apply to a position, the first thing they will often check is the employer’s website. A sleek website and active social media presence will encourage confidence in their decision to apply, since—as mentioned before—a business’s long-term growth opportunities are a very important factor in the typical millennial job selection process.

Millennials becoming a growing part of the workforce isn’t just a trend; it’s here to stay. Businesses that embrace this will find success by appealing to new hires, specifically by providing them with a sense of purpose, fair growth opportunities and touting an active digital presence.
