Advanced Data Systems electronic health record (EHR) system, MedicsCloud, is a cloud-based platform that supports more than 20 specialties with specific, pre-set templates that can be customized to suit a provider's preferences. ADS also maintains a full-featured mobile application for MedicsCloud that allows users to engage with the EHR on a deep level on their iOS and Android mobile devices. It was one of the more comprehensive mobile applications in our review.

Ease of use

MedicsCloud offers a huge improvement over previous Advanced Data Systems products in terms of ease of use and intuitive user experience. For starters, the user interface is far cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing. The more organized layout reduces the need to hunt for needed information or navigating toward dead ends.

On the scheduling tool, users will see any appointments that have been scheduled for the day, along with basic patient information including their name, assigned provider, the type of visit, how long the appointment is scheduled for, the patient's current status, and which exam room they're located in. On the left-hand side of the screen are tabs that allow users to navigate through the EHR software, including home, my documents, patient search, inbox, tasks, reminders, compose mail and treatment program.

The charting tool is slightly busier, but remains organized and easy to navigate. The central dashboard will show a patient's chart, which includes information like the problem they're experiencing, family history, social history, medications, allergies, etc. On the right side of the screen, basic information about the patient will appear, along with time-stamped notifications about where they are in the process. For example, when a patient has completed intake and has been booked to a provider, a new notification will appear underneath a patient profile that says what date and time they were assigned to that provider, seamlessly moving the process forward.

On the left-hand side of the charting tool are navigation tabs, which include home, my links, labs/radiology, past illness, problem list, hospitalization, procedures, allergies and meds, immunizations, etc. These are a lot of tabs that fragment the information a bit more than we'd like, but it still remains easy to access the information a user needs in one or two clicks.

MedicsCloud highlights voice-to-text data entry and voice navigation as a potential method for providers to focus less on the EHR software and more on the patient. Using the "flow text" panel, providers could dictate the entire encounter to the software without having to stop and click forward, although this represents a small learning curve in itself.

Mobile application

MedicsCloud operates on both Android and iOS supported devices with a full featured mobile application. There are some differences between the mobile app and desktop versions, but users can access all the same data and functionality as the desktop EHR. The mobile app lists five major tabs along the bottom of the screen, which include scheduler, mails, requests, search, and log off.

The scheduler is simple, showing patients' names and the time of their appointment for same-day visits. The mail screen is an inbox where users can view any communications sent to them and write a response. On the requests screen, users can view any prescription refill requests that have been sent from patients. And, finally, if a user wants to search through the entire EHR patient database, they can do so via the search tab. Once the relevant patient has been selected, users can view visit history and any notes associated with the patient during those visits.

Once users click through a patient's name into visit histories and notes, they can also navigate the charting tool. Along the top of the screen, six tabs with icons appear. These tabs allow users to navigate notes, patient demographic profile, lab and test results, allergies, medications and e-prescribing, and a visit summary of all prior visits.
