Bizness Apps, based in California, offers small businesses – especially restaurants and retail outlets – a lot of flexibility in creating a native iOS and Android app or a progressive web app, if you prefer to go that route. There's really one pricing plan for small businesses, the Single App Plan (which is the one we evaluated).

The Verdict

Bizness Apps app maker's strengths make it an app creator well suited for retail outlets and restaurants. Static landing pages created in the dashboard are impressive. The creation and submission process, while never overly difficult, was more involved.

You can view all of our recommendations for app makers and development solutions on our best picks page.

The Single App Plan features a wide selection of content-creation and marketing tools. The software offers a lot of templates and is relatively easy to learn and use. Bizness Apps works across multiple platforms. You can create apps that are native to iOS and Android devices, and for businesses that want to be on the leading edge (or that want to circumvent consumer app "fatigue), you can also design a progressive web app (PWA). For restaurants and retail stores, there are some cool features you can integrate into your app.

Getting started, Bizness Apps offers more than 70 templates you can choose from, and many of these templates suit several different types of industries. Choose your template carefully, because once you start building your app, you can't change templates without starting all over again. Bizness Apps gives you three choices when it comes to the layout of your app, which is fewer than other app makers we evaluated.

Adding content is a more complex process with Bizness Apps than it is with other app builders. There is a higher learning curve involved with the interface. When adding features and then previewing the changes, we had to jump from tab to tab to verify the changes had actually been saved. You also need to religiously save your page every time you make a change.

One nice feature with Bizness Apps is that you can add content from your website by simply entering the URL into the content management system. The platform offers helpful viewing options so you can see what your app will look like on smartphones and tablets. You can get a sense for what your app will look like either through the software, or you can send it to your smartphone so you can see firsthand what it looks like.

This app making software is especially helpful and convenient for restaurants, retail businesses and businesses that conduct a lot of email marketing. For restaurants, you can post your menu and have your customers place their order through your app (and you can accept payments through the app), or you can offer a convenient way for customers to reserve a table. There are integrations available with Grubhub and iMenu360, to name a few. Retailers, too, can capitalize on in-app sales and add a loyalty feature for customers. There are also integrations with Shopify, Magento and payment gateways like Braintree, PayPal and Stripe. If your business does a lot of email marketing, you can promote your business with QR codes, and integrations are available with MailChimp, Constant Contact, iContact, and others.

Bizness Apps is well suited for retail outlets and restaurants, and not just because of its features and integrations. Static landing pages look impressive, and for busy restaurant and retail shop owners with limited staff and time, it is possible to create an impressive, professional-looking app with the features your customers want relatively quickly. The creation and submission process, while never overly difficult, did involve more steps than other app makers we evaluated, yet, despite these drawbacks, we were impressed by the fact that even if you don't have coding knowledge or expertise, you can create an attractive app with this software.

Another area where Bizness Apps shines for these particular small businesses is its ability to reach customers once they've downloaded the app. GPS directions can help customers find their way to your physical location, and phone numbers listed in your app can be dialed using the one-touch calling feature. This makes it incredibly easy for your customers to connect with you.

Bizness Apps is pricier compared to other app makers. The Single App plan costs $99 per month and is billed monthly on a credit card. In addition to the monthly fee, if you plan to create an iOS app, Bizness Apps charges a $199 submission fee. (Google Play also charges a lifetime $25 fee.) For some businesses, though, the features and integrations may well be worth the costs.

In terms of support, Bizness Apps gives you direct access to its knowledgebase from the software. There you can find frequently asked questions, video tutorials and a blog. If you need direct assistance, you can contact technical support by phone or email. Unfortunately, it does not offer live chat.
