Cayan, formerly Merchant Warehouse, is a merchant services company that offers both tiered and interchange-plus pricing options for its credit card processing services, with good rates for each pricing model.
Though the representatives we spoke with were attentive and knowledgeable, we found Cayan lacked transparency. This merchant processing company doesn't post information about its fees and costs on its website, and when we contacted its representatives, multiple times over the phone and via email, the information provided lacked consistency.
Cayan has EMV-ready equipment, which is essential as of the October 2015 liability shift. It sells basic terminals for $139, which is a lower price than what many other merchant services providers charge for similar terminals. These terminals are equipped with NFC technology, which allows you to accept payments made using mobile wallets such as Android Pay and Apple Pay.
In our testing, we looked at industry-recommended interchange-plus pricing. Cayan charges 0.20%, plus $0.10 per transaction above interchange, which is better than average. This credit card merchant services provider performed exceptionally well in fees as well, offering the lowest monthly fee on the lineup at $4.95. Moreover, no monthly minimum is required, though you do pay the $99 annual PCI-compliance fee, which is average. Cayan doesn't charge a setup fee or annual fee. If you have a customer dispute a transaction, resulting in a chargeback, the company charges $25 per incident, which is average.
If you need online merchant services or a virtual terminal, Cayan can establish a payment gateway for you through Authorize.net. When you want to run both in-person and online transactions, you have to set up two different merchant accounts. Cayan doesn't charge a gateway setup fee, but there is a $10 gateway monthly fee. You can customize the payment gateway using Cayan's Genius API.
Setting up a merchant account with Cayan is easier than average, earning the company 96% on our Ease of Application score. You simply submit your application online; approval and setup takes one business day. Once your account is approved, the company takes one to two days to clear the account and deposit funds into your bank account.
While the quotes were inconsistent, customer support was helpful and received full marks on our customer service score. You can contact representatives with basic questions by phone, email and via live chat.
Cayan doesn't post its pricing for its credit card processing services online, which is inconvenient and lacking in transparency for businesses looking for a merchant services provider. However, it offers good rates and low fees for both its interchange-plus and tiered pricing plans. It can set up your merchant account quickly and offers a low-cost terminal equipped with both EMV and NFC technology.
