Checkeeper is a full-service check writing software application with bookkeeping features, database backup and electronic payment capabilities. Its comprehensive features and clean interface earn it our Silver Award.
Checkeeper offered all the bookkeeping features we looked for – an included register, payee accounts, integrations with payroll and accounting software, the ability to issue checks from multiple accounts – making it a good choice if you have simple needs. The checkbook register lets you track payments for budgeting or invoicing purposes. This check writing software also handles multiple accounts, so you can pay from different client accounts or personal accounts as needed.
The payee accounts feature lets you store information in case you have recurring payments, saving you from having to input information again and again. In addition, all information is archived for easy searching and retrieval.
If your accounting and payroll needs are more complex, you can integrate this check writer software with other programs. For example, it works as an add-on to the Xero accounting program, showing you the accounts payable online, letting you create checks for new vendors and recording payments to Xero. It also integrates with FreshBooks and Harvest. In addition to these ready-programmed integration capabilities, it offers API codes to integrate with your favorite desktop or web applications.
Creating a unique check design is easy with Checkeeper. You can use one of the provided templates or scan in a check of whatever style you like. Once your check is scanned, you alter the information fields you need using the drag-and drop features. The drag-and-drop interface makes it easy to design your checks. You can see the check as it will appear when printed, so you can arrange elements to create a look unique to your brand. Once the check itself is designed, you can click and drag elements to the stub. If you wish to add a signature, that's easy to do as well.
Templates are saved in real time as you edit, and you can save multiple templates. If you prefer to work with pre-printed checks, the program will accommodate any brand. This makes it convenient if you are switching from a different program as well.
This check printing software will work on any printer and using any check stock. While Checkeeper says you do not need special MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) ink to print checks, it's a good idea to have some on hand so that banks are able to accept and process your checks. MICR ink is needed to print the MICR code, a character-recognition technology used by banks that allows its readers to scan and read the information directly into its devices.
It's a security feature to make sure the checks are assigned to the correct bank. It also identifies the specific bank branch, which means the check can clear faster. Some places will not clear checks without this code. You will need special ink in order for the check readers to clearly read the MICR code. This is true for any check writing software, not just Checkeeper.
If you are not equipped to print and mail checks yourself, you can hire Checkeeper to do this service for you.
One big advantage to this check writer software is that it can send Automated Clearing House (ACH) checks as payment. Known colloquially as electronic payments, an ACH check signifies an authorized credit or debit payment transfer from one financial institution to another. This saves you time as well as money for printing materials.
You can batch print checks, even those with separate templates. If something happens and certain checks in the batch did not get printed, it alerts you. This check writing service does not have an email alert for getting third-party approval of check printing like some of the other check writer programs in our lineup do.
Checkeeper has an online portal, so you can view account information no matter where you are, and it can back up the database so you don't lose important information. The search function lets you find a payment or check.
This software does not have a manual or FAQs, but it offers a couple of basic tutorials on its Vimeo channel. In addition, you can get help via live chat and email support.
If you need a stand-alone check writing software application or one that integrates with your payroll or accounting program, Checkeeper is an excellent choice. Its API code lets you integrate it with just about any program. It can print checks or send them electronically, and you can design checks from one of its templates or by scanning in a check. It's an excellent choice for check printing software.
