Cigna is a health and life insurance company with a global span. Its dental insurance is comprehensive and covers 100 percent of the costs of standard preventative maintenance as well as a fair percentage of root canal and orthodontia. It doesn’t cover as much of basic services, like fillings, compared to other dental insurance companies, but this is an insurance company worth considering if you have kids or plan on moving overseas. However, if you live in New York or Washington, you aren't eligible.
This company has three plans to choose from. The preventative plan only covers the cost of oral exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride applications, sealant and non-orthodontic space maintainers, but it covers these 100 percent. It seems like a great deal, but we recommend checking the prices for these procedures in your area to see how much you would actually spend in a year on these services. We have found that often you spend almost as much or more for insurance to cover these services than you would if you paid for them outright. The other two plans pay a percentage of other dental work, from fillings to root canals. The highest-tier plan, myCigna Dental 1500, covers orthodontia and has a one-time deductible of $50. The waiting period before you can take advantage of this is a year, but if you have children due for braces, it's worth considering.
This site makes it easy to see what each plan offers and lists exceptions, including variations by state. It also works with 167,000 dental offices worldwide. Its U.S.-based network of dentists is small for a large dental insurance company – 85,000 – but it covers costs for out-of-network dentists as well. With dentists who are not part of the Cigna network, you may have to pay the balance of the costs, however.
Cigna dental insurance has plans that span from a cheap plan that fully covers preventative dental care to a more expensive plan that covers orthodontics.
While its U.S. network of dentists is smaller than most, it covers some expenses for out-of-network dental care. In addition, it has agreements with 167,000 dental offices worldwide, making it a choice worth considering if your situation takes you abroad.
It does not provide insurance for New York or Washington, however, so if you live in one of those states, check out our reviews of other dental insurance companies.
