Cisdem DataRecovery Mac hard drive recovery software is inexpensive and has fast scanning and recovery speeds. It does a great job recovering image files, but in our tests to recover documents, videos and music, it fell well below average. In addition, when it does recover files, the results are not well organized, making it difficult to find and restore a particular file or type of files. It's a good program if you work with images and are concerned about your budget.
We tested the applications in our lineup by simulating the two most common data loss scenarios: files due to accidental deletion or a corrupted file directory and files lost due to a reformatted drive. We then used images, documents and multimedia files of many types.
Cisdem DataRecovery retrieved an average of 96% of lost photos and 98% of the photos lost due to reformatting. These were its best results. They are competitive compared to the across-all-applications average success rate of 98%. However, if you have a full drive that is large, even a small percentage can mean hundreds of unrecovered photos.
This is an even bigger consideration when looking at Cisdem's scores in recovering documents, music and videos. With a 30% success rate in retrieving lost document files, it ranked lowest of all the applications on our list. In our reformatted drive test, it recovered a meager 34% of documents. While we had varying results in this test among all the programs, the average overall was 85%. For multimedia files, it only retrieved 54% of lost files and 58% on a reformatted drive – still well below the overall average of 73% for all applications. Consider this program if you rely on images.
Cisdem DataRecovery was easy to install and has excellent speeds in scanning and recovering files. (Incidentally, we did not find a correlation between speed and quantity of recovered files. However, a speedy program makes it easier to run multiple times on a single drive, increasing the chance of recovering more files.) It also works with RAID systems.
Unfortunately, once Cisdem finds of your files, it places them in a single folder rather than separating them by file type and extension. Other higher-ranking Mac hard disk recovery applications separate by file type, making it easier to find and recover the files you need.
You can contact customer support via email. The company has an online knowledgebase. In addition, it sends free updates for the software.
While Cisdem DataRecovery costs significantly less than other programs we reviewed, it also has a lower success rate, especially with document files. It's easy to install and run, but puts the files into a single directory, making it difficult to find the file you need. The help options are sparse. The fast scan and recovery times make it easier to increase your chances of finding your files by running it more than once. Overall, Cisdem is a good program if you rely on images but not the best for overall recovery.
