CompuGroup Medical offers three different electronic health record (EHR) solutions. CGM Clinical PM/EHR is an integrated practice management and EHR solution; CGM Enterprise is an EHR solution for large practices, enterprise systems and hospitals; and CGM webEHR is a fully cloud-based, stand-alone EHR solution. Each has its advantages and disadvantages depending on the needs of the practice in question, but we chose to focus on CGM's Clinical PM/EHR and CGM webEHR, because those solutions are most suitable for small and midsize practices.

The Verdict

CompuGroup Medical's electronic medical record (EMR/EHR) systems get the job done for a relatively low price and offer different types of solutions. However, they do not include some of the more advanced features some other EMR vendors offer.

CGM webEHR

CGM webEHR is CompuGroup Medical's stand-alone, cloud-based EHR solution. This is the choice for practices that already have billing and practice financials covered, but require an EHR system for patient encounters and regulatory compliance to avoid financial penalties.

CGM webEHR is marketed as an easy-to-use EHR that requires little training or implementation. However, there is a learning curve with virtually every EHR solution, no matter how intuitive they might seem, so it's important to thoroughly examine the system during a live demo. Involving your staff to see how CGM webEHR matches up with your team's workflow and preferences is key.

CGM webEHR also includes custom templates that can be tailored to your practice's workflow and specialty. However, user reviews mention that the system wasn't always flexible and some providers often used fields in ways other than they were intended.

This EHR solution is highly interoperable, boasting more than 1,500 interfaces with labs, imaging facilities and hospitals. Interoperability is a mainstay of the government's Meaningful Use Stage III standards, so it's important to select an EHR that can communicate with other members of the healthcare ecosystem. It also includes an e-prescribing function, which can be used to order and refill patient prescriptions from pharmacies.

CGM Clinical PM/EHR

CGM Clinical is CompuGroup Medical's integrated practice management and EHR solution. It provides a 360-degree view of your practice, encompassing patient health records, documentation, practice financials, billing and more. CGM Clinical is a scalable solution that supports a variety of specialties.

CGM Clinical incorporates the same features of CGM webEHR with a practice management module that provide billing and claims tools, as well as a dashboard that provides an overview of practice financials. It also boasts reporting functions that are not included in the CGM webEHR, which can slice and dice data to allow users to drill deeper into the financial health of the practice, finding areas that can be improved or spotting red flags before they become problems.

Neither CGM webEHR nor CGM Clinical include a patient portal, but they offer it as an add-on. Patient engagement is becoming more prominent in the electronic medical records industry, and many platforms offer the patient portal as an integrated product in their EHR and practice management systems.

Implementation and Training

CompuGroup Medical will work with your practice depending on your implementation support needs. You can choose from a few methods of training support, based on your staff's experience level and your confidence in their ability to pick up the software quickly.

The most intensive training program includes onsite, one-on-one training, where CompuGroup Medical staff will come to your practice's location(s) to train providers and staff on use of the system step by step. This method is recommended for practices that feel unsure about switching to the new EHR and want the reassurance of guided training from professionals who are already familiar with it.

The next method is remote virtual training. This is suitable for practices that feel their team is savvy enough to grasp the basics of an EMR and just need some pointers to become acquainted with CompuGroup Medical's specific system. Finally, there is the online, self-guided training method, which is only recommended for highly tech-savvy practices that are confident they can easily master the system on their own.

After training, CompuGroup Medical provides follow-up resources and training manuals that can serve as refresher references or to introduce new users to the system. The company conducts regular webinar training sessions and will accommodate requests for additional training on advanced features. It also hosts an annual conference and an online customer portal for additional help.
