Editor's Note: Prosoft Engineering, Inc. has released Data Rescue 5, which is compatible with both Mac and Windows, and now features guided click recovery, among other new updates to the software. We're linking to version 4 and what you'll read below is our review of Data Rescue 4. We will evaluate, rank and review Data Rescue 5 when we next update the Mac Data Recovery site.
Developed by Prosoft Engineering, Data Rescue 4 Mac data recovery software is easy to use while being highly effective in recovering deleted files. It demonstrated exceptional performance in our testing, recovering nearly every file, regardless of file type. Top it off with a wide range of features that make it useful for business.
We tested the two most common ways computer files are lost. Accidental deletion included clearing out the deleted files in the computer's Recycle Bin, while the second test involved reformatting the drive. Reformatting often happens when you connect an outside drive, like a flash drive or an extra hard drive, and for some reason, the computer does not recognize it and directs you to "scan and fix errors.
Data Rescue 4 is one of only three file-recovery programs for Mac that recovered 100% of the photos in each of our tests. Photos are the easiest of files to recover because the data patterns of photo files are easy to decipher. All but two of the programs we tested recovered more than 95% of files lost due to accidental deletion or reformatting the hard drive. The average across all Mac data applications for recovering image files was 98%.
Documents, on the other hand, aren't as easy to recover. The average across all applications is 86% for lost files and 84% for files lost to reformatting. Data Rescue 4, however, excelled in retrieving lost document files. It recovered 100% of those lost due to deletion and 99% lost to reformatting; only one other product performed as well.
Another file type that poses challenges for data recovery software is music and audio files. However, Data Rescue 4 recovered 100% of lost or deleted media files and 93% of media files lost to reformatting. While 93% seems a low score compared to its other performances, R-Studio was the only program that did better in this test. The overall average across all applications was 72%.
One point to keep in mind when comparing our recovery rate percentages is that, while some differences seem minor, it depends on the size of the drive you are trying to recover. Even 1% of a standard 1TB hard drive is 10GB of data. The average iPhone photo is 2MB, so that single percentage translates into 5,000 photos. When you consider that most documents take only kilobytes of memory, you can see the importance of getting recovery software with the best recovery record. If your company runs on electronic paperwork, whether that comprises documents or spreadsheets, Data Rescue 4 is your best bet.
The great recovery rates of this Mac lost file-recovery software is complemented by its fantastic ease of use. You can have it installed, registered and ready to scan in just a few minutes, and even the newest of users can see how to scan and recover lost data. From installation to recovery, the interface walks you through the process.
Data Rescue also recovers most of the original file names. This makes the entire process so much easier than other Mac recovery programs, which may assign random file names to recovered files, forcing you to search through unfamiliar names to find the file you truly need. While most of the files names came through intact, we did find some incorrect names, especially with music files.
Normally, we did not see a correlation between speed and recovery capability, but in this case, you should know that Data Rescue 4 is among the slowest-running programs we tested, measuring 61GB per hour for scanning and 67GB per hour for recovery. Compare this to the averages of 109GB per hour and 117GB per hour. This can lead to a long wait.
If you are looking for data recovery software for an office that runs on Macs, then Data Rescue 4 is a good choice. It works on RAID systems, offers a professional version that includes partnership with Data Rescue Center (Data Rescue's hard drive repair service), and provides free updates. It does not allow you network access, so you cannot remotely run the software on a computer in your network. If you're looking for a program that offers remote scanning and recovery, EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is our second highest rated software and offers network access.
Prosoft Engineering's website offers video tutorials that walk you through how to use various tools and how to recover data from the boot utility tool. If you need more direct assistance, you can call the company or talk to someone via live chat or email. The only support feature missing is a community user forum.
Data Rescue 4 is the best Mac data recovery program for businesses that depend on a wide range of media from documents to videos. The software is simple enough for the most novice user, while offering tools that make it a great resource for an IT professional.
