Edge Diagrammer is flowchart software from Pacestar Software, an Arizona company that has been in business since 1990, providing diagramming tools for many well-known brands including IBM, General Electric and several branches of the U.S. military. In addition to Edge Diagrammer, it also offers basic flowcharting software and programs specific to LAN and UML diagramming. Edge Diagrammer is available for purchase as single- or multi-user licenses, with free upgrades provided within a year of the purchase date.
This software has a good variety of the features and tools that you need to create process flow diagrams and org charts. The shapes automatically resize to accommodate your text, and the program allows you to enter text directly in the shapes and replace the shapes without first deleting the existing shape. The shapes have multiple connection points, and you can add more, should the need arise. The software works with the fonts you have installed on your computer and lets you customize your text with styles and colors.
However, the software doesn’t support real-time collaboration, doesn’t automatically create organizational charts from an imported data source such as a CSV file and doesn’t have spellcheck. It doesn’t give you the ability to expand or collapse groups of shapes or link from one shape to another. It doesn’t have a revision history that automatically saves each version of your document; however, when you save a diagram, the program creates a backup file of the previous version.
The software supports diagrams with multiple pages and gives you two layers to work with – a background and a foreground for each page, which is more limited than most other programs. The canvas doesn’t automatically expand, but you can resize it to print diagrams up to 62 inches, which can then be printed onto multiple pages.
When you’re ready to share your diagrams with your clients, a free, online reader is available on the company’s website for them to download. It allows them to view and print the diagrams you send to them and move existing shapes. It doesn’t allow them to add comments, to change the text on the diagrams, or to delete or add shapes or lines. It doesn’t allow you to password protect your diagrams. The program doesn’t have a presentation mode to assist with sharing your diagrams in client meetings.
You can export documents in a variety of image formats, including JPG, PNG, GIF and TIF.
The program doesn’t natively export diagrams to PDF, rather the company suggests installing a PDF printer driver that is available as freeware. You can save diagrams to your website as HTML.
In addition to using Edge Diagrammer to create flowcharts, org charts and data flow diagrams, you can also use it to create network diagrams and technical drawings, such as logic gate diagrams for circuit design. Although you can download free extension packs with additional shapes and templates from the company’s website, this program doesn’t include as many templates or shapes as some of its competitors. If you’re specifically looking for flowchart software that you can use for UML or LAN diagramming, the company offers separate software programs for those purposes.
The program is only available for Windows operating systems. You can download it from the company’s website, and a 30-day free trial is available if you want to test the program before purchasing. Like all of the diagram software providers we reviewed, customer service and technical support for Edge Diagrammer is available via email. It doesn’t provide phone support or host a user forum or blog. You can download its user’s guide from the company’s website.
Edge Diagrammer has good flowcharting tools, but its applications are more limited than most. It has fewer templates and shapes and lacks many of the features that you would need if you want to collaborate with colleagues or share your diagrams with clients.
