Gusto allows for an unlimited number of payroll runs each month and lets you pay employees by direct deposit or check. Running a payroll can be completed in just a handful of minutes. After logging in to the online system, you click on the "Run Payroll" tab and fill in the number of hours each employee worked, vacation or sick days taken, bonuses or commissions earned, and expense reimbursements. After clicking the "Submit Payroll" link, you receive a confirmation letting you know that the money is being sent via direct deposit, or that you can print checks for those who need it.

Gusto also automatically calculates, pays and files local, state and federal payroll taxes and sends all employees and contractors their W-2 and 1099 forms at the end of the year.

Additionally, the service manages paid time off, automates new-hire reporting and provides detailed payroll reports. Gusto also lets you add personal notes to employee pay stubs, allows employees to make charitable contributions directly from their paychecks, and sends automatic reminders to those in charge alerting them of employee birthdays and work anniversaries.

The service integrates with a wide range of accounting, time and attendance, expense management, and human resources programs, such as QuicBooks, Xero, Freshbooks, TSheets, Depity and Capital One Spark Business.

For its payroll services, Gusto charges a base fee of $39 per month, plus $6 per employee or contractor.   Other services provided by Gusto include 401(k) retirement and workers' compensation plans and health care plans designed specifically for small businesses.
