i-Script is a medical transcription service that offers quick turnaround times and low prices. The company has no setup fees or contracts, and it charges different costs per line depending on the turnaround time you need with a maximum turnaround of one business day.

The Verdict

Though it's missing a number of features that other services include, i-Script's quick turnaround times make it competitive.

For dictation services, you can use your own digital handheld recorder or call in to the provided 800 number. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so you can record and send your medical dictations at any time. When using the handheld recorder, you can upload and transfer the recordings through the company's online software, Scriptase.

Once the company receives your medical dictation, a transcriptionist types it up and sends it through two levels of quality assurance to check for errors. Transcribers, medical professional or copy editors review documents before electronically delivering them to your office.

The company meets the minimum-security standards with 128-bit SSL encryption for its software. Your files are stored online by i-Script for five years or until you cancel your service, and the data is automatically backed up. Instead of searching through file cabinets for paper files, you can save time by using the electronic search function to find what you are looking for. Batch printing and batch download features are available to save time as well.

This service lacks many of the document management tools you will find other services, such as electronic medical record (EMR) integration, electronic signatures and faxing capabilities. The software also doesn't support HL7 compatibility. Transcriptions are delivered in Microsoft Word document format. This can be an issue if you are concerned about documents being edited unlawfully, although it does make it easier to copy and paste information into an EMR. Line-count reporting is not available either, but a quick telephone call to the company will give you a breakdown of your current bill.

Customer service is not accessible after business hours, so if something goes wrong then, you have to wait for a response.

i-Script is a flexible transcription service that offers three turnaround times at affordable prices. You don't get many security features, such as electronic signatures or faxing capabilities, but if you need a basic service, this company can serve your needs.
