Iris Medical Review

By Adam Uzialko, business.com Writer | Updated Aug 09, 2018

Iris Medical is a small company that touts a strong first-pass claims rate and guarantees a 5 percent increase over your existing revenues when you sign up. The company will also provide clients with full access to its own electronic health record (EHR) and practice management platform, which is designed to increase communications between Iris and its clients.

The Verdict

Iris Medical promises a strong first-pass claim rate to help you increase collections while reducing the burden of billing on your front office. However, its customer service and website quality is not up to par with companies in our review.

Iris Medical's customer service was subpar in our experience, and we had a difficult time obtaining all of the information we wanted about the billing service. The website was equally unhelpful, with broken links and more than once redirecting us to unhosted domains. There are no screenshots of the software solutions and little more than vague claims that the poor customer service did little to reinforce. Overall, while Iris purportedly has a strong billing process, we were unconvinced that the company could ultimately deliver.

Billing Process

Iris Medical Billing uses a committee-style system, where billing staff is organized based on separate tasks and specialties. This ensures that the people focusing on each aspect of the billing process are experts in that specific area, reducing the opportunity for errors that will lead to claims rejections by payers. The company promises that claims will be created, validated and filed within 24 hours of receiving them from a practice.

After receiving your claims, Iris will handle the submission through clearinghouses and to payers. Much of the submission process is automated with Iris, while staff members focus on following up on unpaid claims, fixing errors on denied or rejected claims, resubmitting those claims, and collecting unpaid patient statements. Iris uses a rules engine that scrubs claims for errors prior to submission, flagging any that will automatically be rejected by payers. The company maintains a network of thousands of payers.

Software

Iris Medical maintains its own suite of healthcare IT products, including an EHR system and practice management software. The platform, called alloFactor, is designed to maximize the ease of sharing information between the Iris billing department and your practice.

alloFactor is a proprietary platform that we did not have access to review, so we cannot verify the company's claims as to its effectiveness. It is also unclear whether the company can work through other software platforms your practice might already be using prior to outsourcing your medical billing.

Support

Iris Medical assigns a dedicated account manager to your practice when you sign up. The account manager will guide your practice through the transition period of handing off your billing and will also help you complete any necessary enrollments, credentialing, staff training, or custom needs.

Iris Medical's customer service left something to be desired in our experience. After multiple attempts to contact the company, we were able to get a hold of a representative, who offered little more information than what was available on the company's website. The website itself is not particularly informative and is somewhat out of date, which gave us pause when considering whether this company could be a strong choice for most medical practices.

It is worth mentioning that several links on the website are broken or lead to unhosted domain names, leading us to question the thoroughness of the company in general.
