Kroll Ontrack has been in business since 1985 and is one of the older professional hard drive recovery services. Kroll is known for its suite of data recovery and computer maintenance software but has expanded into hard disk data recovery service with its four labs in the United States with as many drop-off locations as there are UPS stores. All devices that you send to Kroll Ontrack are shipped free via UPS.

The Verdict

Kroll has a long track record in the field of data recovery. Its failure to provide proof of certification for its cleanroom facilities and data and privacy controls are concerns to consider.

Cost Structure

Kroll Ontrack's data recovery service offers standard service with a turnaround time of seven business days for the full process (it offers a free evaluation, which the company estimates takes four hours to complete). Its priority service has a turnaround time of three business days (again, with the evaluation estimated to take four hours to complete). A 24/7 emergency service is available that aims to resolve your case within 24 hours, working around the clock until your data is recovered.

Evaluation Process

Kroll Ontrack's evaluation process is free and fast, beginning with a phone consultation, which may result in the service advising that you use their DIY data recovery software (if it's a logical data loss issue resulting from accidental deletion or formatting).

If the issue is more advanced, you can ship your hard drive to Kroll Ontrack with the evaluation taking only four hours when it arrives at their lab. You're assigned a dedicated case manager who works with you and is your liaison to the recovery technicians.

Beyond hard disk recovery, Kroll Ontrack offers a range of services to businesses, consumers and government. You can just as easily task Ontrack engineers with recovering your crashed SQL, Exchange and SharePoint servers. Your recovery process can be customized to your needs, all communicating with your case manager. The company also specializes in other data services, including tape backup transfers and certified data destruction.

Recovery Environment

Kroll Ontrack has several locations around the country, allowing for quick shipping to one of their facilities.

The service claims its workstations comply with ISO 5 Class 100 standards. However, the company does not list certifications from third parties. Third-party certification would provide more assurance to consumers.

Security Features

Kroll Ontrack's data recovery facilities are monitored 24/7 with security cameras and personnel. Further, customer information and data is kept strictly confidential and is only accessible to authorized personnel.

Recovered data is returned to clients on an encrypted device, as is data sent over FTP.

Kroll Ontrack indicates it has SAS 70 Type II security audit accreditation. However, SSAE 16 replaced this type of audit in 2011, which means that Kroll either hasn't had an SSAE 16 audit or the website is listing outdated information.
