Healthcare IT products, including practice management software, can get expensive very quickly. Many charge on per provider, per month, which can quickly add up – to say nothing of immense startup costs and add-on fees. To remedy this, MDConnection is inexpensive practice management software that a medical practice can get up and running quickly but doesn't cut corners on quality. It's our best pick for inexpensive practice management software because it combines affordability with effectiveness and doesn't skimp on the important features.

Pricing

MDConnection has some of the most competitive rates in our review. Its pricing structure is based on the industry standard (per provider, per month) and has four tiers: two for MD providers and two for non-MD providers, such as nurse practitioners. This is a convenient aspect of MDConnection's pricing that we didn't see with other practice management software vendors in our review. The costs for all four pricing tiers are among the lowest we found during our review.

  • Fee-based transactions: This plan is $199 per provider per month, plus 25 cents per claim submission, eligibility verification or ERA posting. This tier includes unlimited tech support and 24/7 calendar access from any device.
  • Unlimited claims: This plan costs $299 per provider per month and includes unlimited claims submissions, eligibility verification and ERA postings. This tier also has unlimited tech support and 24/7 calendar access from any device.
  • Non-MD fee-based transactions: This plan costs $199 per provider per month, plus 25 cents per claim submission, eligibility verification or ERA posting. This tier includes unlimited tech support and 24/7 calendar access from any device.
  • Non-MD unlimited claims: This plan costs $99 per provider per month and includes unlimited claim submissions, eligibility verification and ERA postings. This tier also has unlimited tech support and 24/7 calendar access from any device.

MDConnection also partners with Elation Health and Nexus Clinical for EHR system services, and it can build integrated practice management and EHR software upon request. These solutions require you to obtain a custom quote from the company, but they all include unlimited claim submissions, eligibility verification and ERA postings.

Features

Billing

Billing is a critical aspect of managing any practice, so it's important that you don't cut corners on the billing features in your practice management software. MDConnection offers the essential billing tools we looked for in practice management software, including insurance eligibility checks and tools to make the complex healthcare billing process run more smoothly.

  • Patient insurance eligibility verification: One of the most important features we looked for in a practice management system, patient insurance eligibility verification identifies deductibles, copayments and coinsurance prior to a patient's visit.
  • Claim submission: An internal claim submission tool allows staff to post claims through clearinghouses and other payers after capturing charges and coding claims appropriately with the software's tools.
  • Claim tracking: An intuitive list of pending claims can be sorted by status and date submitted, and it provides an overview of rejected and unaddressed claims.
  • Financial analysis: MDConnection's financial analysis tool provides an overview of your practice financials, allowing you to document and track your performance and cash flow over time and better manage the practice's books.

Scheduling

Like any business, a practice can't run day to day without planning and organization. That's where scheduling features come in. MDConnection covers the most important scheduling features and has a user-friendly interface that makes navigating the daily agenda intuitive and straightforward.

  • Scheduling snapshot: With a single click on any appointment, a "snapshot" appears with a brief overview of patient information, including their insurance, demographics, appointment type, financial information and links to any relevant clinical information already stored on the patient.
  • Quick-action menu: The scheduling tool also includes a menu that allows you to make on-the-fly changes to any appointment listed in the central dashboard. Options include canceling the appointment, rescheduling it, or printing the charge slip upon completion of the encounter.
  • Day, week and month view: The calendar can be adjusted to view appointments as scheduled by provider or location on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Customer Service

In our experience, customer service was difficult to get in contact with at first, which was a bit frustrating. Once we made contact on our third attempt, however, a friendly and engaged representative answered our questions to our satisfaction. We did not receive any significant follow-up materials, though, like we did with many other companies in our review. While our experience was good once we connected with a representative, we were somewhat concerned about the company's availability in the event of an emergency.

Limitations

The biggest limitation we experienced was our difficulty connecting with a customer service representative. Especially in the early days, healthcare IT products can be difficult to navigate and sometimes succumb to glitches and lag. Responsive customer service and tech support is essential to successfully navigating these problems.

MDConnection is also somewhat limited in the scope of its features, but we expected that, given the extremely low pricing the company offers. Ultimately, MDConnection is a great choice for a very small practice on a budget, but if your management needs are heavier, you might consider a more expensive and comprehensive option.
