Features and Pricing
OnTrack's comprehensive data recovery software allows users to securely and precisely recover permanently deleted files. It is able to recover corrupt files on hard drives, memory cards and USB drives.
With its quick and deep scan features, you can scan deleted files fast to find what you're looking for, or run a more in-depth scan to recover hard-to-access files. On Macs, you can even locate and rebuilt corrupt, damaged or deleted volumes on formatted devices. It can recover files from a variety of systems, including HFS, HFS+, FAT, ExFAT and NTFS.
OnTrack offers four different versions of its EasyRecovery software, each of which is available for Windows or Mac. Prices for each of the paid versions includes a one-year, one-machine license.
- Free: The free version of EasyRecovery allows you to recover up to 1GB of data. You can recover damaged and deleted files, and retrieve data from formatted or corrupted volumes.
- Home ($79): This version includes quick scan and deep scan features to optimize your file recovery.
- Professional ($139): Ideal for small and mid-sized businesses, EasyRecovery Professional recovers data from multiple loss events, such as accidental deletion and formatting, or severe hard drive corruption.
- Technician ($499): For IT professionals, the Technician version of this software lets you perform RAW recoveries on lost Mac volumes and create encrypted file systems.
OnTrack also offers a back-up copy of the software on CD for an additional $10.74.
No matter which version of EasyRecovery you use, it offers disk diagnostics and the ability to wipe a hard dive fully so data cannot be recovered. If you need to remove sensitive information from a disk to repurpose it or destroy it, this is a handy feature. However, once you do it, you cannot use Ontrack Easy Recovery to get the information back.
Ease of Use and Overall Performance
As noted, OnTrack's ease of use makes this data recovery software stand out. The intuitive interface effortlessly tackles highly advanced disk recovery tactics. Rather than simply initiating a scan, it guides you through a menu of selecting the type of device you need recovered and the issue affecting it. You can select a deleted file recovery or a reformat recovery, and the program determines the appropriate settings for the scan. If you need more adjustments, it's easy to get at the settings on the menu.
We tested recovery of a variety of different file types under two conditions: loss due to accidental deletion and loss because the hard drive was reformatted. Ontrack EasyRecovery easily retrieved all the image, document, and video and audio files lost due to deletion – a 100 percent success rate. However, reformatting proved a greater challenge. It had a 100 percent recovery rate for documents and a 97 percent success rate for video and audio files. However, it fell short in salvaging image files, with a success rate of 75 percent. If your business relies on images, keep this in mind.
It has a slower scan speed than many hard drive recovery programs. This does not affect performance, but if you find you need to step away, you can pause the scan.
The recovery screen had equally intuitive controls, so you can recover deleted files with just a few clicks. Its one drawback is that it does not allow you to preview found files to make sure they are intact.
This disk recovery software developer offers an extensive knowledge base with articles and news on the industry. It offers support via phone, live chat and email. It also has online courses through its Data Academy for an additional fee.
