When you sign up with PayPal Here for your credit card processing service, you receive access to the company's POS software. The software is more basic than most, but each account supports an unlimited number of SKUs and up to 1,000 users. It can be used by several business types, such as retail and counter-service restaurants, and in conjunction with other iPad POS software programs that have more advanced features. Restaurants can use it with TouchBistro or Lavu, and retail businesses can use it with Vend and Erply.

The Verdict

PayPal Here's POS system lacks most of the features we looked for, but it's a good option for businesses wanting a simple, inexpensive solution.

Unlike most of the POS systems for iPad we reviewed, PayPal Here has no monthly subscription fee. Instead, the company requires you to use it as your processor, so it won't work for you if you're under contract with another credit card processing service. You're not required to sign a contract to use PayPal Here, and its services are provided on a pay-as-you-go basis, so you can close your account at any time without incurring a cancellation fee. The company is transparent with its pricing and posts details about its costs on its website.

The only POS hardware PayPal sells is its card readers. It posts a list of compatible hardware on its website that you can use to see if your existing setup is compatible or make sure that any new POS equipment you buy from a third party will work with the system.

Where PayPal Here's POS system is lacking is in its features; it doesn't have most of the ones we looked for in our review. It does have reporting tools, and you can filter your data by salesperson, item or date. You can also export your reports as CSV files in case you need to import them into another program. But it doesn't have reports that show your sales per hour or your top sellers and most profitable products.

Using its inventory management feature, the Item Catalog, you can add an unlimited number of items to the system, categorize them, and assign options and variations to them. The system doesn't alert you when inventory is low, nor can you use it to create purchase orders.

You can add your employees to PayPal's POS system, assign unique usernames and passwords to each, and set permissions to control the tasks and data they can access. A single account supports up to 1,000 users, which is an impressive number. This iPad POS system can also manage your customers' contact information with its address book, and you can add a loyalty program to the system using a third-party integration. The system doesn't support online orders directly, but PayPal has several web payment solutions that you can add to your website and also integrates with multiple eCommerce platforms.

You can reach PayPal's customer support team by phone or email 24/7, though if you call after hours, the call may be answered through PayPal's international offices. You can also turn to PayPal's community forums and online knowledgebase to troubleshoot any issues you encounter using this system.

PayPal Here's POS system doesn't have as many features as its competitors, lacking some inventory management and reporting tools. However, for businesses that only require a simple POS solution, it's an affordable option with flexible terms.
