R-Studio disk recovery software offers excellent features for IT professionals in business, particularly its commercial version. It does an excellent job recovering lost image, video and audio files, but it fell short on document recovery.
We tested the recovery of multiple file types when the files were lost due to accidental deletion or reformatting of the hard drive. In both cases, R-Studio did an excellent job recovering images, video and audio, but it fared badly with documents: It recovered only 88% of deleted files on the reformatted disk and a startlingly low 73% for files that were accidentally deleted. It found 100% of images no matter how they were lost as well as all the video and audio files we "accidentally" deleted. However, it only found 93% of video and audio files lost due to reformatting. (We ran the test multiple times, so the results represent an average for each test.)
As with most hard drive recovery software, R-Studio begins by letting you do a quick scan or an in-depth scan. If the quick scan does not uncover the data you need, you must start again and choose the more extensive scan. It does not let you save scan results for later recovery.
While the advanced features will appeal to experienced users, having them interspersed throughout the basic commands created a more complex interface, especially in scanning. Not only are the tools not always needed but some, such as hex editing, can damage the disk you're trying to recover if used improperly.
You can find several versions of this software, including a network addition that gives managers and IT staff the ability to recover deleted files from a computer on their network. This is a great asset when an employee accidentally deletes a file. The Technician version is for independent businesses and offers remote access and the ability to install the program on a portable drive.
R-Studio's developer, R-Tools Technology, only offers customer support via phone. However, it has a large knowledgebase with information on the program as well as on data recovery in general, and an active forum where you can ask questions or seek advice.
R-Studio is not the best for inexperienced users who mostly work with document files, but for IT professionals and businesses that have a lot of images, video and audio, it's a versatile and useful disk recovery software program. It offers a version that works well for independent IT professionals as well.
