There are a lot of good features to applaud with Infrascale's SOS Online Backup, but most of these features are focused on file backup. The cloud-storage features are slim. File archiving is a significant feature that allows you to free up space on your computer by storing excess files online. This is why this backup-focused service is included in our review of online storage services. While the upload and download speeds were above average, the major downside of SOS Online Backup is the great cost.
For our review of cloud storage services, we evaluated the cost of each service at three levels – an individual with 1TB of storage, a small family with three computers and 1TB of storage, and a large family of five computers and 1TB of storage. We also tested the upload and download speed, as this is a good indication of performance. Finally, we evaluated its ease of use from the perspective of a novice user.
Since SOS Online Backup's personal subscription includes five computers, the major delineation in cost is at the storage level. The subscription used to cover unlimited storage, but SOS has recently moved to a capped subscription that starts at 50GB and goes up to 10TB. Since our review focused on the cost of 1TB of storage, this costs $399.99 per year with SOS Online Backup. It costs the same, whether you're an individual or a large family with five computers. By comparison, the best cloud storage service we reviewed costs $44.62 a year for the same amount of storage among the same number of computers. This cost difference is difficult to ignore, which is why it received a failing grade for value.
In our upload speed tests, SOS Online Backup received an A, recording an average speed that suggests it would take about 4.5 days to complete an upload of 1TB of data. Of the 23 cloud storage services we tested, this speed was among fastest. The download speed was also very good, receiving a B+ grade. The speed suggests that you could download your entire 1TB of storage in about 9 days.
Its ease of use received a C+ in our evaluation. The primary reason for this was the number of steps involved in both the upload and download process, which were more complicated than the other services on our lineup. In addition, the file download process within the desktop app is confusing. From the home page of the app, the restore button is the largest button, but when you click on it, it takes you to a different screen. On that screen, you can sort and view your files, but there is no clear way of restoring the file, because the restore button isn't labeled. It's just a small symbol.
The best feature of SOS Online Backup is its data security. All of your files, whether uploaded from a desktop or a mobile phone, are protected with triple-layer 256-bit encryption. The first layer of encryption occurs before you upload the files. The second layer occurs while the files are in transit to the servers. Another layer of encryption is applied once the files are stored on the servers.
Another great security feature is the option to customize the encryption key for the first layer of encryption. This means that no one can view the files because only you have the password to decrypt them. However, the one downside to a private encryption key is the personal responsibility: If you forget or lose the password, it can't be reset by the service.
With triple-layer encryption and the option to customize the encryption key, SOS Online Backup is one of the most secure cloud storage services you can use. The upload and download speeds were exceptionally fast in our tests. However, the service has a very high cost for 1TB of storage at each level of users we reviewed, and the overall ease of use was just average.
