Square includes its iPad POS system as part of its credit card processing services. It can be used for many business types, including retail, quick-service restaurants, salons and other service-based businesses. Designed for small and midsized businesses, Square can be used at a single or multiple locations.

The Best iPad POS Systems

The Verdict

Square is an affordable, scalable POS system for small businesses, but you must use the company as your processor to use the POS software, which could be a hindrance.

There's no long-term contract with Square, so you can close your account at any time without incurring expensive cancellation fees. It's unusual in that it doesn't charge a monthly subscription fee for its basic POS system; PayPal is the only other system we reviewed that doesn't charge this. Instead, like PayPal, the company makes its money by requiring you to use it as your credit card processor. This means you won't be able to use Square if you're under contract with another processor or want to shop around for the best deals.

Square is transparent with its pricing and clearly posts its processing rates, hardware costs and subscription fees for software add-ons on its website. Although you need to purchase a card reader, no additional hardware purchases are required. The company sells hardware peripherals and bundles, though you can check the list of compatible equipment to see if the hardware you already own will work with the system.

This iPad POS system has all the features we looked for, with most built in and others available as integrations. From the dashboard, you can view your sales volume by hour and see which products your customers purchase most. You can run many kinds of reports, with options related to sales, inventory, employees and customers. Reports are downloadable as CSV files, so you can import the data into other programs if needed.

Square can help you manage your inventory and supports up to 50,000 items and modifiers. You can add your inventory to the system either manually or in bulk using a CSV spreadsheet. The system can send you daily emails, alerting you when products are low so you can reorder. You need to subscribe to Square for Retail, however, if you need vendor management and purchase ordering. Inventory integrations are also available, such as with Shopventory and Stitch Labs for retail and with Whisk for restaurants.

By subscribing to Square Employee Management, which costs $5 per month for each employee, you can add your staff to the system and set user permissions. This software also allows your employees to use the POS system as a time clock, manages tips and calculates commissions.

The system has a customer database that you can use to collect contact information for your marketing efforts, and it offers marketing and loyalty modules that you can add to the system for a monthly fee. Included at no additional cost is its feedback tool, which allows your customers to click on their digital receipts and tell you about their experiences with your business. You can respond to their feedback and send them coupons or refunds.

Using the Square Online Store, you can expand your business online. If you need a more advanced solution, Square offers integrations with several eCommerce platforms. It also has an API that you can use to connect the system to an existing website. If you want to set up a self-service kiosk that your customers can use to place orders or check themselves out, and you have a developer to help you, you can do so using an add-on.

Square's customer service team has extended business hours, and you can contact it via email or phone. You can also find helpful information on the company's website in the form of a knowledgebase and community forum.

Square is an affordable POS system for small businesses. It has a good mix of features, with advanced tools available through software add-ons and integrations. It has favorable terms, with transparent pricing and no lengthy contract requirement. However, you're required to use Square for your credit card processing, which is problematic if you're under contract with another provider.
