The Kyocera TASKalfa 4551ci is built with specifications in line with the best color copiers. Internally, the color copier printer's base configuration has a typical 1,150-sheet capacity. However, this can be supplemented to an impressive 7,650 sheets on a fully configured TASKalfa. By comparison, most enterprise-level printers typically top out at around 6,000 pages. With the printer's rated duty cycle of 200,000 pages per month and a 45 page per minute production rate, the TASKalfa can easily handle the needs of a large office.

The Verdict

Images are not its strength, but the Kyocera TASKalfa 4551ci is still an effective printer for larger businesses.

The TASKalfa's image fidelity is a minor step back compared to the printer's storage options. The 600 x 600 dots per inch (dpi) print and scan resolutions are decent, but many comparable multifunction printers have print resolutions of 1,200 x 1,200 dpi, which results in higher-quality sheets.

Kyocera also offers optional features you can purchase for additional printing functionality. It has the ability to create booklets, positive/negative reverse images, and repeat or mirror images, among other options. Plus, you can add a secure watermark. Along with these touches you have the basic functions that every business requires, such as print, scan and optional fax capabilities.

When you're considering a copier for your small- to medium-size business, security features are important. While the base model of this copier doesn’t come equipped with any security features, you can purchase the additional data security kit that provides security overwrite and encryption for printing, copying and scanning. You can also add a card authentication kit to ensure that only an authorized group of people use the copier.

The 4551ci has standard dimensions of 25.5 x 30.2 x 29.4 inches and a weight of 251 pounds, making it comparably built to similar free-standing color copiers. Kyocera's website offers limited documentation and driver download resources, but it’s supplemented with in-person technical support from the manufacturer's network of regional dealers.

When deciding on a color copier printer for your business, the production ceiling of the model can be a significant bottleneck. While the Kyocera's resolution options are slightly behind the best copiers, the 4551ci's superb upgrade options make it a valuable addition for offices in need of an effective high-capacity printer.
