Vembu Technologies develops a range of server backup software solutions to fit the needs of small, midsize and enterprise businesses. With the Vembu BDR (Backup Disaster Recovery), you get the scalability that you'll need for it to grow with your business, but the resource-heavy requirements and the very below-average ease of use means that it may be too much for a small business with only a few servers and no IT expert on hand to adequately deploy the software.
The backup tools are the same you'd find among the best server backup software in our review. You can back up a variety of platforms, though the software doesn't have any of the encryption options that you'd find with the best server backup software. You can back up to attached storage devices, mapped drives, remote storage and a cloud service. You can back up incrementally and differentially at a folder level, which provides the flexibility you'll need if you have only a few servers. You can also schedule backups and throttle bandwidth to minimize the impact on your resources.
The best feature of Vembu BDR is the high compression rate. In our tests, it compressed the original data by 35 percent, which was the highest compression rate we found in our lineup. If you backed up a 1TB drive, the backed-up data would only be 650GB. The compression rate saves you 350GB of storage space. This becomes even more significant when you consider that most servers store much more than 1TB of data. For comparison, the average compression rate in our review was 18 percent. However, we should note that file compression can vary according to file type and existing compression, so your experience may be different.
The biggest downside to Vembu BDR is the resource footprint. It repeatedly crashed the client side of the backup sets, using an average of 98 percent of the CPU. In addition, the minimum RAM requirement is 8GB, though the manufacturer recommends that you have at least 16GB of RAM. For most small businesses, this means running the software only during off hours, because running any additional apps will crash the server.
Another downside is the overall low ease of use. This server backup software received a D for the installation, backup and restore features, and interface. The installation required remote help from the Vembu support staff, and the backups took a very long time to complete. In addition, the interface isn't user-friendly, even when you have experience with server backup software. To get the most out of this software, you need to be an IT expert, which may be beyond reach for most small businesses.
Vembu BDR provides a wide range of flexibility, making it a good choice if you have a mixture of platforms and locations. The high compression rate saves you more storage space than any other server backup software, but the resource footprint is too much for most small businesses. In addition, the installation, features and interface are not easy to use or navigate, which means you need an IT expert to use this software to its full potential.
