VerticalResponse has practically every tool you need to create professional and successful email marketing campaigns – a drag-and-drop editor, contact management tools, segmentation capabilities, A/B testing, automation tools and more. Its plans fit into the budget of any small business.

Competitive Pricing and Terms

Like most other email marketing services, VerticalResponse's prices are based on the number of contacts in your email list size. It offers four plans: Free, Basic, Pro and Pro+. You can calculate specific pricing on its website.

All of VerticalResponse's plans offer core email features, including an easy-to-use email editor, contact list management, basic reports and analytics, the capability to send automated emails to new contacts, an HTML editor, customizable templates, email customer support, Facebook and Twitter sharing, access to an image library, free online forms, customizable pop-up forms, and the ability to build and publish landing pages.

  • VerticalResponse's free version lets you send up to 4,000 emails per month for up to 300 contacts. This plan never expires and no credit card is required to sign up.
  • The Basic plan starts at $11 and includes unlimited emails, automated follow-up emails, phone and live chat support, the ability to remove VerticalResponse's logo from emails, and the capability to create and publish multiple landing pages.
  • The Pro plan starts at $16 per month and is for businesses that want automation and advanced campaign reporting. This package includes all of the features in the Basic subscription, along with detailed reports, heat maps of where your contacts are clicking, automated campaigns with autoresponders and email series, subject line testing, and 10 test kit credits a month.
  • Pro+, The most expensive plan, caters to businesses needing expert guidance with their campaigns, and plans start at $196 per month. In addition to the features in the Pro Plan, this subscription includes consultation with a campaign strategist who will create and send emails for you, one promotional email and one newsletter designed by one of VerticalResponse's experts, eight expert-created social posts each month and tailored reports with recommendations for optimization.

If you plan to send a large volume of emails, you'll need to contact VerticalResponse for a personalized a quote. Also, if you don't want to pay for a plan, it has pay-as-you-go credits. For 300 emails, you'll pay $7.50. The more credits you buy, the less each individual credit costs.

If you're a nonprofit, VerticalResponse offers 10,000 email credits free per month or 15 percent off a monthly subscription plan.

VerticalResponse Features

A/B split testing: You can use VerticalResponse's A/B testing to determine which subject line will generate better results. You can also test specific words and length and then use that information to optimize future campaigns.

Automation: People get a lot of emails a day. With VerticalResponse's automated follow-up emails, you can automatically send a follow-up email to the people who missed your first message. All you have to do is create a new subject line and decide when you want to send it. With autoresponders, you can automatically send the right message at the right time. Autoresponders are sent based on your customer's interactions with previous emails. You can also automate a campaign to welcome new subscribers.

Contact management: VerticalResponse's contact management tools are easy to use. You can upload or add your contacts and create segmented email lists.

Email editor: When designing your email, you can choose from one of VerticalResponse's templates, import HTML code or create your own from scratch. The drag-and-drop tools are easy to use and you can quickly customize your email with your own colors, images and logos. Once you schedule your email, you have the option to schedule a follow-up email and resend the original email to contacts who didn't open the first one. You can also share your email on Twitter and Facebook.

Landing pages: With its landing page creator, you can build attractive web pages to complement your email campaigns. Like its email editor, you can start with a landing page template or design one from scratch. Other landing page features include web forms for collecting customer data and email addresses, SEO optimization, hosting options and landing page reporting and analytics.

Preview: Before you send an email, you can use VerticalResponse's inbox preview to ensure your emails looks exactly how you want it to appear to your customers.

Reporting: Once your emails go out, you can view how well it performed. Even with the free account, you can see basic analytics, such as how many emails you sent, the bounce rate and social analytics. You receive advanced reporting with the paid plans, including device and browser statistics, geographic data, heat maps, domain reports, comparison reports and multiple list metrics. All the data is shown in graphs that are easy to understand.

Ease of Use

VerticalResponse has a drag-and-drop editor that makes designing emails a breeze. For our test email, we used a pre-built template, and it only took us 10 minutes to customize it with our own content and images.

The editor takes you through each stage of the process so you don't have to worry that you will miss an important detail before your email goes out. Once your email is designed and ready to go, you're asked to pick a contact list to send it.

Before you sign up for a paid version of VerticalResponse, it's worth it to test its free plan to determine if the service works for you.

If you have a question or run into an issue, VerticalResponse reps are available through email, and with the paid plans, you can contact them through live chat and phone. VerticalResponse has a newsletter and blog that touch on a range of subjects helpful for business owners new to email marketing. You can learn more about email list building, email design, subject lines, e-newsletters, social media marketing, small business marketing and product updates.

Drawbacks

When evaluating VerticalResponse, we did experience a hiccup. When we sent out our emails, they either landed in Gmail's Promotions folder or in the Spam folder. However, we used a personal email account, which is less reputable than a business email account.

Another thing we would have liked to have seen with VerticalResponse is more comprehensiveness with its A/B testing tools. Many email marketing services allow you to test more than subject lines. Elements like pictures, content, and even the time of day are all factors you can test in other programs. With VerticalResponse's platform, your ability to test these multiple factors is limited.
