Walmart Pay is Walmart’s proprietary mobile wallet; it’s available as a feature on the mega retailer’s popular Walmart App. The wallet app is free and available for both Apple and Android phones. It supports all major credit and debit cards, and you can use the Walmart Pay app nationwide in each of the chain’s 4,600 stores. Because the Walmart Pay app is the retailer’s proprietary digital wallet, it only works at Walmart. Walmart doesn’t currently accept any other mobile wallets.

The Verdict

To access Walmart Pay, you download the Walmart App and create a Walmart.com account. You can then update your profile to add the debit or credit card of your choice. The app also accepts prepaid cards, and you can load the app with your Walmart gift cards. Like most mobile wallets, you cannot link the app to your checking account. If you’re one of the more than 20 million active Walmart App users, all you need to do to access the Walmart Pay feature is update the app and then add or select your preferred payment card.

The Walmart Pay app uses QR codes to complete transactions rather than the NFC technology employed by Apple Pay and Android Pay. However, like these other mobile wallets, the transaction and your payment card information are secure; your card data isn’t stored on your phone and isn’t transmitted at the register.

To check out, you open the app, enter your PIN or use Touch ID to unlock the feature, then hold your phone’s camera over the QR code to scan it. The sales clerk presses a button on the register to complete the transaction and your phone confirms the transaction with a sound (unless your phone is muted). You then receive a digital copy of the receipt inside the app. If you prefer paper receipts, the clerk can print a copy for you. You can’t use Walmart Pay if you need to receive cash back, and it can’t be used to purchase fuel.

In addition to the Walmart Pay feature, you can use the app to store your Walmart receipts, keep track of and use your Walmart gift cards, refill your prescriptions, create shopping lists, and find an item’s location inside the store. You can also enroll in the Savings Catcher feature that compares the prices of eligible items that you purchased at Walmart with competitor’s advertisements and refunds you the difference in the form of Savings Catcher Reward Dollars that you can use in the company’s stores or on its website.

The Walmart Pay app is the only mobile wallet that you can use at Walmart stores. It works on most Apple and Android phones, and it allows you to use debit or credit cards, prepaid cards and Walmart gift cards. Additionally, the app has useful features, such as the Savings Catcher, that may help you save money.
