IPVanish VPN Review

Donna Fuscaldo
Donna Fuscaldo

Budget-conscious small business owners don't have to compromise on performance and security just to save money on their virtual private network (VPN). They need a VPN that lets them connect multiple devices at a time and provides enhanced security and encryption, but doesn't break the bank. That's where IPVanish comes in. Not only is it among the cheapest VPN providers we reviewed, it also supports unlimited device connections. Other VPN providers set a five- to 10-device limit, charging extra if you want more employees connected to the VPN at one time. That can get expensive pretty quickly, depending on the size of your business. But low pricing and unlimited devices aren't the only reasons IPVanish is our best pick for value. It offers fast connections and lots of bells and whistles, making it stand out as a top VPN provider.

Why IPVanish Is Best for Value

Not every small business owner needs a VPN with a vast network and an array of features; sometimes connecting securely and privately to the internet is enough. Cash is king in uncertain times, and the more a business owner can keep in the bank, the better. It's the reason we included value as one of our use cases. IPVanish fits the bill for several reasons, including low pricing, unlimited connections at one time, and secure and fast internet connections.

IPVanish offers both monthly and annual pricing options.

What We Like About IPVanish

  • IPVanish is among the cheapest VPN providers we reviewed, offering extremely low introductory pricing.
  • This VPN provider allows customers to connect an unlimited number of devices at the same time. Other vendors set a limit and charge extra once you max out your connections.
  • You don't have to exchange high security and performance for a low price with this vendor; IPVanish uses industry-standard protocols and encryption.

What We Don't Like About IPVanish

  • IPVanish operates more than 1,600 servers, which is smaller than some of its rivals' networks. The closer your company is to a server, the better your connection is, so more is generally better.
  • The company has a zero-logging policy but has turned information over to law enforcement in the past. That may be off-putting to business owners whose main concern is privacy.

Did you know?Did you know? IPVanish is one of the few VPN vendors that supports an unlimited number of connected devices at once. Only one other vendor to make our best-picks list offers this – Surfshark.

IPVanish is among the lowest-cost VPN providers for small businesses in the market, excluding the free ones. It costs $28.79 (or $2.40 per month) for the first year and $89.99 thereafter. At $90 a year, IPVanish is in line with some of its competitors, but those vendors don't allow unlimited connections, which is where much of IPVanish's value lies. For example, in our PureVPN review, you'll see that it charges $69.95 a year, but for only 10 connections at one time. If you need more, you'll have to pay extra.

IPVanish also has an affordable VPN-plus-storage package. For $31.99 for the first year and $99.99 thereafter, you can get 500GB of storage, file sharing, online backup, and ransomware protection.

Ease of Use

Installing IPVanish is quick and easy.

  • Step 1: Download the app for your operating system or device.
  • Step 2: After IPVanish is installed on your computer, you're ready to connect to its servers. Log in to the app using your registered IPVanish username and password.
  • Step 3: Click on the "connect" button to access the VPN.

We like that IPVanish's software walks you through installation step by step but also lets you skip that tutorial and go straight to using the app. If you are comfortable using VPNs, you won't be forced to waste time on the tutorial.

When using IPVanish for the first time, you are prompted to install the IPVanish Helper, which automatically chooses the best available city and VPN server connection for you. If you're not connected right away, you'll know it: IPVanish uses a green "on" button on the right side of the app to confirm your connection to the VPN.

IPVanish makes it easy to see when you are properly connected.

IPVanish made the cut when it comes to affordability, but that's not the only reason we selected it as the best VPN for value. Here are more features that make IPVanish stand out from a value perspective.

Variety of Supported Apps

IPVanish supports several devices and operating systems, including iPhones, Android devices, Amazon Fire Sticks, routers, Windows, Macs, Chrome OS and Linux PCs. All of those devices can be connected to the VPN at the same time, which was attractive to us. If the VPN provider supports a ton of different devices but only allows five connections at one time, where is the value for a business that needs more? In addition to supporting several devices and operating systems, IPVanish offers some free tools, including a secure password generator.

Respectable Server Network

IPVanish may not have the largest number of servers we found, but its network isn't too shabby either. It operates more than 1,600 servers in over 75 different locations. IPVanish is one of the few VPN providers that owns and manages all of its servers instead of renting the hardware. That gives it more control over its networks and showcases its expertise in the area. After all, if the company has to run its own servers, it better know what it's doing. If you want a larger server selection, though, check out our review of CyberGhost, which has more than 7,200, or our review of NordVPN, which has more than 5,000.

Users can easily check server connections through IPVanish's dashboard.

No Limitations

IPVanish differentiates itself by providing a secure connection without limiting usage for its customers. This is a big reason we selected it for best value. The vendor won't impose a global limit on bandwidth, connections to the VPN per account, the number of times your business connects, or the number of servers you can access per day. There are also no limits on P2P (peer-to-peer) VPN access.

Security and Privacy

VPNs are designed to let internet users surf anonymously and securely. IPVanish takes that responsibility seriously, relying on key VPN protocols such as IKEv2, OpenVPN, and L2TP/IPsec to protect its customers. It also prevents geotargeting by concealing your business's real IP address behind an anonymous one. That way, online marketers, internet service providers and websites can't track what you're doing online.

IPVanish prevents you from facing censorship restrictions by changing your device's location. This is a benefit to businesses that need access to international websites. IPVanish also offers a kill switch, which is a must-have to make it onto our list of the best VPN providers. The kill switch makes sure your IP address doesn't leak if the VPN loses connection.

Speed and Performance

Small business owners need a VPN that doesn't slow down their internet connection by a noticeable degree. You don't want your VPN to drop connections or buffer instead of downloading. While IPVanish didn't earn our best pick for performance, it does maintain connection speeds within acceptable limits. We like that IPVanish automatically connects you to the optimal server to prevent interruptions from video buffering or lag times. The less time you have to spend thinking about how to get the best connection, the better.

With IPVanish's map, it's easy to find servers.

No-Logging Policy

Privacy is a top priority of the VPN providers that made it onto our best-picks list, including IPVanish. This VPN vendor has a zero-logging policy, which means it does not record any of your connection, traffic, or activity data. That is not true of all budget VPN providers. There are free VPN options on the market – including Hotspot Shield, our best pick for streaming – that share users' data with advertising partners. (The reputable ones clearly disclose their data-sharing arrangements.)

TipTip: When selecting a VPN provider, even if you don't choose one with a no-logging policy, go with a vendor that is transparent about its privacy practices, logging and data sharing.

One of the reasons we selected IPVanish as the best value is that it automatically chooses the best server for you at the time of connection; you don't have to figure out the optimal server for your business and location. But if you do want to manually connect to a server or configure the settings, IPVanish makes that easy too. It even has a speech function you can activate to set up the VPN.

Configuring the VPN is easy, thanks to dropdown menus and a clear user interface. In the settings, you can choose a different VPN protocol if you're having trouble connecting to the VPN, scramble OpenVPN traffic, and set auto reconnection, which will automatically reconnect an app to the VPN if it gets disconnected. You can also turn the kill switch on and off in the settings, block other local network interfaces when using the VPN, and turn on DNS/IPv6 leak protection.

IPVanish makes it easy to configure the VPN, giving you control over protocols and security.

Customer Support

IPVanish offers customer support 24/7 by phone, email, and web chat, but it provides ways for you to solve your problems yourself on its website first. You can type in a question on the customer support page and automatically get a list of articles and tutorials that may solve your problem.

When we emailed an inquiry about a real-time connection problem, we got an immediate response alerting us that a ticket had been created. The response included links to support articles. Within an hour, a customer service rep emailed us back. We also tested the live chat during off-peak hours and got a response in under three minutes. That is in line with other live chat services we tested for VPN companies. A quick response is important to small businesses that always need a connection. Any downtime could mean lost business.

IPVanish is highly rated among its customers. It has a 4.7-star rating on Trustpilot from more than 7,100 reviews.

Bottom LineBottom line: Just because IPVanish is cheap and allows unlimited connections doesn't mean it's slow or easy to penetrate. This VPN company takes security and performance seriously without charging a lot for it.

IPVanish isn't going to make sense for all small businesses; it has some limitations to consider. Take privacy for starters. While the company has a zero-logging policy, its track record is questionable. Back in 2016, IPVanish shared logs with law enforcement conducting a criminal investigation.

While IPVanish operates a lot of servers, it doesn't have as many as some of its rivals. Your connection could slow down if your business isn't near a server. Also, IPVanish doesn't offer a built-in ad blocker. You can download a third-party app to block ads when you are connected to the VPN, but that's an additional step.

What Is a VPN?

A virtual private network, or VPN, is an extra layer of privacy and protection that sits on a business's network. It sends your company's internet traffic through a secure network that encrypts your data and masks your IP addresses. It also enables your employees to securely connect to the company's network remotely.

When evaluating VPN providers for value, we began by comparing the pricing plans of the leading vendors. After we narrowed it down by price, we began to peel back the onion. We studied the number of devices that can be connected to the server at any given time, the VPN's privacy policies – including whether the VPN logs activity or sells data to third parties – and how it stacks up from a security and performance perspective. After all, value isn't derived by price alone; it comes from the features and services you get for that price.

IPVanish FAQs

How much does IPVanish charge for its service?

IPVanish charges $28.79 (or $2.40 per month) for the first year, and $89.99 thereafter. What makes this such a good value is the unlimited device connections. Unlike other VPN providers, IPVanish doesn't cap the number of devices your business can connect to the VPN at one time. If you have a lot of remote workers, that can be a significant cost saving.

Does IPVanish limit the amount of bandwidth you can use?

No, IPVanish has no limits on its VPN – not on bandwidth, connections per day or the number of servers you can access. Unlimited bandwidth means it doesn't matter how much data goes through the VPN on any given day; it won't throttle your speeds.

Bottom Line

We recommend IPVanish for small business owners who care about …

  • Keeping the cost down without giving up high security and performance.
  • Connecting an unlimited number of devices to the VPN without paying extra.

We don't recommend IPVanish for small business owners who …

  • Care most about performance and want to use a VPN with a vast network of servers.
  • Need advanced technology, super speeds and guaranteed data privacy.
